Prevalence and risk factors associated with birth asphyxia among neonates delivered in China: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BMC Pediatr

December 2024

Department of Nursing, Shenzhen People's Hospital (The Second Clinical Medical College, Jinan University; The First Affiliated Hospital, Southern University of Science and Technology), Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Background: Birth asphyxia is a critical condition caused by an insufficient oxygen supply during delivery, and it poses a major threat to the health of newborns. The present meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of birth asphyxia among neonates and identify its risk factors in China.

Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, the China Academic Journals (CNKI), the Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM), the China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and the WanFang database were searched for related publications.

Familial hypercholesterolemia in Chinese children and adolescents: a multicenter study.

Lipids Health Dis

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology, Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, National Clinical Research Center for Child Health, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310052, China.

Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disorder mainly marked by increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations and a heightened risk of early-onset arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This study seeks to characterize the genetic spectrum and genotype‒phenotype correlations of FH in Chinese pediatric individuals.

Methods: Data were gathered from individuals diagnosed with FH either clinically or genetically at multiple hospitals across mainland China from January 2016 to June 2024.

A novel ARCN1 splice-site variant in a Chinese girl with central precocious puberty, intrauterine growth restriction, microcephaly, and microretrognathia.

BMC Pediatr

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 1678 Dongfang Road, Shanghai, 200127, China.

The ARCN1 gene encodes the delta subunit of the coatomer protein complex I (COPI), which is essential for mediating protein transport from the Golgi complex to the endoplasmic reticulum. Variants in ARCN1 are associated with clinical features such as microcephaly, microretrognathia, intrauterine growth restriction, short rhizomelic stature, and developmental delays. We present a case of a patient exhibiting intrauterine growth restriction, preterm birth, microcephaly, micrognathia, and central precocious puberty.

Using a unique dataset on the performance of soccer players in China (retrieved from 632 matches involving 24 teams during the 2014 to 2016 seasons), we investigate the effect of air pollution on different performance indicators that rely on different mixtures of the physical and cognitive inputs of players. To ensure a causal interpretation, we implement an instrumental variable (IV) approach using thermal inversion as the instrument for air pollution. We found that players' performance indicators, especially those more related to cognitive factors, are more strongly influenced by air pollution.

Marine zooplankton communities represent one of the most diverse and abundant species groups on earth. To investigate the ecological niche characteristics and interspecific interactions of marine zooplankton, and to elucidate their role in carbon deposition and biogeochemical cycling, we conducted a study on the zooplankton community near Taishan in the South China Sea between December 2015 and September 2016. Using niche breadth, niche overlap, the variance ratio method, chi-square tests, and linkage coefficients, we analyzed the interrelationships among the major zooplankton species.
