Nevirapine is metabolized by several hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoforms to generate four primary hydroxylated metabolites: 2-hydroxynevirapine, 3-hydroxynevirapine, 8-hydroxynevirapine, and 12-hydroxynevirapine. The present study characterized associations between genetic polymorphisms and metabolite ratios in HIV-infected Cambodians. We demonstrate associations between polymorphisms and metabolite ratios for both 3-hydroxynevirapine and 8-hydroxynevirapine, suggesting involvement of CYP2B6 in generating these metabolites.

To analyze the epidemic characteristics and trends of newly reported HIV-infected people among Chinese and Burmese in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture (Dehong Prefecture) of Yunnan Province, China, from 2000 to 2023, and provide evidence for formµlating AIDS prevention and control measures for the Burmese living in Dehong. The data were obtained from the Chinese Disease Control and Prevention Information System. The distribution of HIV-infected people with different population characteristics was analyzed, and the Joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the temporal trend of crude detection rate in different genders, ethnicities, and ages.

A Three-Year Follow-Up of Bone Density Among Thai Adolescents With Perinatally Acquired HIV After Completion of Vitamin D and Calcium Supplementation.

J Adolesc Health

August 2023

Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand; Centre of Excellence for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Vaccines, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Purpose: To determine changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone metabolism-related biomarkers among Thai adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV infection (PHIVA) at 3 years following completion of vitamin D and calcium (VitD/Cal) supplementation.

Methods: An observational follow-up study was conducted among PHIVA who received 48-week VitD/Cal supplementation (either high-dose [3,200 IU/1,200 mg daily] or standard-dose [400 IU/1,200 mg daily]). Lumbar spine BMD (LSBMD) was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry.

The HIV epidemic is still one of the world's most serious public health challenges, affecting about 38 million people worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan African and Southeast Asian countries. In recent years, tests have been developed to discriminate recent from long-term infection in HIV-infected populations, and these tools can help identify new outbreaks and networks of transmission and target prevention and treatment plans. New rapid tests for recent infection are being deployed in point-of-care settings; however, quality assurance programs need to be implemented to ensure consistency and reliability of the results.

Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and The Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS (CERiA), University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to assess the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) among HIV-positive inmates entering Malaysia's largest prison, Kajang prison, beginning in 2013.
  • The research involved interviewing participants and collecting sputum samples for testing, revealing a 12.6% TB prevalence rate among the 214 recruited individuals, with specific risk factors identified.
  • The findings highlight the urgent need for improved TB control programs in prisons, as there is a lack of global data on TB at prison entry, particularly from Malaysia.
