Most semiconductors have surface dynamics radically different from its bulk counterpart due to surface defect, doping level, and symmetry breaking. Because of the technical challenge of direct observation of the surface carrier dynamics, however, experimental studies have been allowed in severely shrunk structures including nanowires, thin films, or quantum wells where the surface-to-volume ratio is very high. Here, we develop a new type of terahertz (THz) nanoprobing system to investigate the surface dynamics of bulk semiconductors, using metallic nanogap accompanying strong THz field confinement. We observed that carrier lifetimes of InP and GaAs dramatically decrease close to the limit of THz time resolution (∼1 ps) as the gap size decreases down to nanoscale and that they return to their original values once the nanogap patterns are removed. Our THz nanoprobing system will open up pathways toward direct and nondestructive measurements of surface dynamics of bulk semiconductors.

Automatic 4D mitral valve segmentation from transesophageal echocardiography: a semi-supervised learning approach.

Med Biol Eng Comput

January 2025

Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering, Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy.

Performing automatic and standardized 4D TEE segmentation and mitral valve analysis is challenging due to the limitations of echocardiography and the scarcity of manually annotated 4D images. This work proposes a semi-supervised training strategy using pseudo labelling for MV segmentation in 4D TEE; it employs a Teacher-Student framework to ensure reliable pseudo-label generation. 120 4D TEE recordings from 60 candidates for MV repair are used.

Neuromuscular Strategies in Dominant and Non-Dominant Legs in Dancers During Dynamic Balance Tasks.

J Dance Med Sci

January 2025

Frontier Research Institute of Convergence Sports Science, College of Educational Sciences, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea.

Ballet-based dance training emphasizes the equal development of both legs. However, dancers often perceive differences between their legs during balance or landing. There still needs to be more consensus on the functional difference between dominant (D) and non-dominant legs (ND).

Plasmonic materials can be utilized as effective platforms to enhance luminescent signals of luminescent metal nanoclusters (LMNCs). Both surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced fluorescence (SHINEF) strategies take advantage of the localized and increased external electric field created around the plasmonic metal surface when excited at or near their characteristic plasmonic resonance. In this context, we present an experimental and computational study of different plasmonic composites, (Ag) Ag@SiO2 and (Au) Au@SiO2 nanoparticles, which were used to enhance the luminescent signal of Au nanoclusters coated with glutathione (GSH) molecule (Au25GSH NCs).

Age-related changes to the orbicularis oculi muscle include impaired eyelid function, such as lagophthalmos, alterations in tear film dynamics, and aesthetic changes like wrinkles, festoons, and the descent of soft tissue. To date, the structural and functional changes that would comprehensively increase our understanding of orbicularis aging have not been analyzed. This study aims to investigate functional outcomes using surface electromyography and correlate them with ultrastructural changes in orbicularis during aging.

The Daguangbao landslide (DGBL), triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, is a rare instance of super-giant landslides globally. The post-earthquake evolution of the DGBL has garnered significant attention in recent years; however, its deformation patterns remain poorly characterized owing to the complex local topography. In this study, we present the first observations of the surface dynamics of DGBL by integrating satellite- and ground-based InSAR data complemented by kinematic interpretation using a LiDAR-derived Digital Surface Model (DSM).
