We have developed a short and simple synthesis of tetranuclear palladium(II) complexes that have been structurally confirmed by X-ray analysis. These complexes were formed in about 30 % overall yield by spontaneous metalation of dimethylaminoarene derivatives and exhibit a high stability. We have studied the utility of the tetranuclear palladium(II) complexes as precatalysts for Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. Our novel complexes show excellent catalytic activities with high turnover numbers (TON) and high turnover frequencies (TOF) (e.g., for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction: TON up to 538000 and TOF up to 23400 h at room temperature).

The electrochemical oxidation of anodic metals (M = nickel and palladium) in an acetonitrile solution of the thiosemicarbazone ligands ()-2-(1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylidene)-N-methylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide (a), ()-2-(1-(p-tolyl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (b), and ()-N-phenyl-2-(1-(p-tolyl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (c) yielded the homoleptic complexes [ML], , , , and and [ML], as air-stable solids. The crystal structures for , , , and show the ligands in a transoid disposition with the [S,S] and [N,N] donor atom pairs occupying positions on the nearly square planar coordination plane of the metal. The structure for of S4 symmetry comprises a tetranuclear palladacycle where the metalated ligands are arranged around a central PdS environment: a crown ring with alternating palladium and sulfur atoms.

Treatment of the Schiff base ligands a-f with Li[PdCl]/NaAcO in methanol under reflux gave the single nuclear palladacycles 1a-1f, with the metal atom bonded to a terdentate monoanionic [C,N,S] iminic ligand and to a chloride ligand that completes the palladium coordination sphere. Reaction of 1a-1c with silver perchlorate/triphenylphosphine in acetone at room temperature yielded the single nuclear complexes 2a-2c as the perchlorate salts, after substitution of the chloride ligand by a triphenylphosphine. However, reaction of a-c with Na[PdCl]/NaAcO in methanol at room temperature also gave compounds 1a-1c albeit contaminated with small amounts of the corresponding free aldehyde (mixture A).

Cyclometallated palladium(ii) and platinum(ii) pyrenyl-derived thiosemicarbazone (H2PrR) complexes of the type [M4(μ-S-PrR-κ3-C,N,S)4] (M = PdII, PtII; R = ethyl, cyclohexyl) have been synthesised in good yields and fully characterised. X-ray crystallography showed that the tetranuclear complex [Pt4(μ-S-PrCh-κ3-C,N,S)4](CH3)2COCHCl3 contains an eight-membered ring of alternating M-S atoms. The ethyl derivatives [M4(μ-S-PrEt-κ3-C,N,S)4] exhibit potent antiproliferative activity towards A2780 human ovarian cancer cells, with IC50 values of 1.

Macrocycles consisting of a 20-membered ring containing two imidazolium salt functionalities and of the formula [PhCHN(CHCHCH)Im(CHCHCH)][Br] (Im = imidazole = 3a, benzimidazole = 3b) were synthesized in 70-75% yields. These salts serve as precursors to macrocycles containing two N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) moieties. Reaction of the macrocyclic salts 3a and 3b with silver oxide afforded macrocyclic-bis(NHC)silver(i) complexes 4a and 4b.

Three tetranuclear (1-3) complexes and a mononuclear (4) palladium(ii) complex were synthesized from 3-acetyl-chromen-2-one Schiff base ligands [H-3MAC-Rtsc] (where R = H [H-3MAC-tsc]; CH[H-3MAC-mtsc]; CH[H-3MAC-etsc] or CH[H-3MAC-ptsc]) and potassium tetrachloropalladate. Their formation was confirmed by spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Their ability to bind with DNA and albumin was analysed by using absorption and emission titrations.
