Quaternary chalcopyrites have shown to exhibit tunable band gaps with changing anion composition. Inspired by these observations, the underlying structural and electronic considerations are investigated using a combination of experimentally obtained structural data, molecular orbital considerations, and density functional theory. Within the solid solution CuZnGeS Se , the anion bond alteration parameter changes, showing larger bond lengths for metal-selenium than for metal-sulfur bonds. The changing bonding interaction directly influences the valence and conduction band edges, which result from antibonding Cu-anion and Ge-anion interactions, respectively. The knowledge of the underlying bonding interactions at the band edges can help design properties of these quaternary chalcopyrites for photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications.

Luminescence Mechanisms of Quaternary Zn-Ag-In-S Nanocrystals: ZnS:Ag, In or AgInS:Zn?

Chemphyschem

November 2024

College of Design and Manufacturing Technology, Muroran Institute of Technology, Mizumoto-cho, Muroran, 050-8585, Japan.

Highly emissive Zn-Ag-In-S nanocrystals have attracted attention as derivatives of I-III-VI-type nanocrystals without the use of toxic elements. The wide tunability of their luminescence wavelengths is attributed to the controllable bandgap of the solid solution between ZnS and AgInS. However, enhancement of the photoluminescence quantum yield (PL-QY) depending on the chemical composition has not been elucidated.

Synthesis and Transport Properties of ZnSnPAs Chalcopyrite Solid Solutions.

Materials (Basel)

April 2024

Department of Chemistry and Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON N2L 3G1, Canada.

This work focuses on the synthesis and properties of quaternary ZnSnPAs chalcopyrite solid solutions. Full miscibility of the solid solution is achieved using ball milling followed by hot press sintering. The measured electrical conductivity increases substantially with As substitution from 0.

Quaternary chalcogenides continue to be of interest for a variety of technological applications, with physical properties stemming from their structural complexity and stoichiometric variation. In certain structure types, partial vacancies on specific lattice positions present an opportunity to investigate electrical and thermal properties in light of these lattice defects. In this work, we investigated the structural, thermal, and electronic properties of CuInSnSe, a material that belongs to a relatively unexplored class of quaternary chalcogenides with a defect adamantine crystal structure.

Growth-Promoting Mechanism of Bismuth-Doped Cu(In,Ga)Se Solar Cells Fabricated at 400 °C.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

May 2022

Institute for Solar Energy Systems, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Photovoltaic Technology, School of Physics, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510006, China.

The classical high-temperature synthesis process of Cu(In,Ga)Se (CIGS) solar cells limits their applications on high-temperature intolerant substrates. In this study, a novel low-temperature (400 °C) fabrication strategy of CIGS solar cells is reported using the bismuth (Bi)-doping method, and its growth-promoting mechanism is systematically studied. Different concentrations of Bi are incorporated into pure chalcopyrite quaternary target sputtered-CIGS films by controlling the thickness of the Bi layer.

The new quaternary thiosilicate, LiPbSiS (dilithium lead silicon tetrasulfide), was prepared in an evacuated fused-silica tube via high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 °C, followed by slow cooling. The crystal structure was solved and refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. By strict definition, the title compound crystallizes in the stannite structure type; however, this type of structure can also be described as a compressed chalcopyrite-like structure.
