Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the predictability of bone density at posterior mandibular implant sites using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) intensity values.
Materials And Methods: CBCT cross-sectional images for 436 posterior mandibular implant sites were selected for the study. Using Invivo software (Anatomage, San Jose, California, USA), two observers classified the bone density into three categories: low, intermediate, and high, and CBCT intensity values were generated.
Results: Based on the consensus of the two observers, 15.6% of sites were of low bone density, 47.9% were of intermediate density, and 36.5% were of high density. Receiver-operating characteristic analysis showed that CBCT intensity values had a high predictive power for predicting high density sites (area under the curve [AUC] =0.94, < 0.005) and intermediate density sites (AUC = 0.81, < 0.005). The best cut-off value for intensity to predict intermediate density sites was 218 (sensitivity = 0.77 and specificity = 0.76) and the best cut-off value for intensity to predict high density sites was 403 (sensitivity = 0.93 and specificity = 0.77).
Conclusions: CBCT intensity values are considered useful for predicting bone density at posterior mandibular implant sites.

Opportunistic screening is essential to improve the identification of individuals with osteoporosis. Our group has utilized image texture features to assess bone quality using clinical MRIs. We have previously demonstrated that greater heterogeneity of MRI texture related to history of fragility fractures, lower bone density, and worse microarchitecture.

A female NCAA Division I track athlete experienced non-localized shin pain midway through her first season, which was diagnosed as medial tibial stress syndrome. Treatments included strengthening and range of motion exercises, reduced training volume, and pain control modalities, but symptoms worsened. It was revealed she had been suffering from severe sleep deprivation (<3 hours/night) contributing to bilateral tibial and fibular stress reactions.

Probiotics are known to have favorable effects on human health. Nevertheless, probiotics are not always beneficial and can cause unintended adverse effects such as bacteremia and/or inflammation in immunocompromised patients. In the present study, we investigated the effects of probiotics on the regulation of bone metabolism under different health conditions and delivery routes.

Calcium (Ca)-enhanced organic matter (OM) fouling of nanofiltration (NF) membranes leads to reduced flux during desalination and requires frequent cleaning. Fouling mechanisms are not fully understood, which limits the development of targeted fouling control methods. This study employed synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy to quantify the spatial distribution and mass of Ca deposition as well as changes in the Ca coordination environment characteristic of specific fouling mechanisms, respectively.
