A simultaneous sampling campaign was undertaken to study the pollution by 21 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in rivers, drain outlets and their receiving Bohai Sea of China. Chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acids (Cl-PFESAs) are being used as fluorinated alternatives and they were included in this study. In comparison with other regions and countries, high concentrations of ∑PFASs in seawater samples from the Bohai Sea, ranging from 5.03 to 41 700 ng/L (median: 64.8 ng/L), were observed. The spatial distribution of PFAS levels in this sea area was in the ranking of Laizhou Bay > Liaodong Bay > Bohai Bay > other sea areas. By comparing the levels and composition profiles of PFASs in the seawater and their sources (rivers and drain outlets), it was concluded that rivers and drain outlets are the primary sources of PFAS contamination to the Bohai Sea. These PFAS levels varied seasonally among the rivers and drain outlets, but statistically significant changes were not observed. Levels of 6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFESAs in rivers, drain outlets and receiving sea were firstly reported in the present study. Relatively high concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFESA were found in drain outlets, ranging from below method limits of quantification (MLQ) to 7600 ng/L, but 8:2 Cl-PFAES detection was infrequent and all median concentration below MLQ. Mass discharges to the sea of 6:2 Cl-PFESA from rivers and drain outlets to the sea were estimated to be 37 and 17 kg/y, respectively.

Burkholderia cenocepacia outbreak linked to taps in a neonatal intensive care unit.

December 2024

Infection Prevention and Epidemiology, Monash Health, Clayton Australia; Monash University, Clayton, Australia; South East Public Health Unit, Monash Health, Clayton, Australia.

Background: Burkholderia cenocepacia complex is an important cause of hospital acquired infections. We describe the management of an outbreak in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to tap colonisation.

Methods: Microbiological testing of touch (n = 26) and non-touch taps (n = 28), sinks and drains, including genomic sequencing of selected isolates.

Lumped parameter simulations of cervical lymphatic vessels: dynamics of murine cerebrospinal fluid efflux from the skull.

Fluids Barriers CNS

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota, 111 Church St SE, Minneapolis, MN, 55455, USA.

Background: Growing evidence suggests that for rodents, a substantial fraction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drains by crossing the cribriform plate into the nasopharyngeal lymphatics, eventually reaching the cervical lymphatic vessels (CLVs). Disruption of this drainage pathway is associated with various neurological disorders.

Methods: We employ a lumped parameter method to numerically model CSF drainage across the cribriform plate to CLVs.

Glaciers in the Arctic have lost considerable mass during the last two decades. About a third of the glaciers by area drains into the ocean, yet the mechanisms and drivers governing mass loss at glacier calving fronts are poorly constrained in part due to few long-term glacier-ocean observations. Here, we combine a detailed satellite-based record of calving front ablation for Austfonna, the largest ice cap on Svalbard, with in-situ ocean records from an offshore mooring and modelled freshwater runoff for the period 2018-2022.

Using RZWQM2-P to capture tile drainage phosphorus dynamics in Ohio.

J Environ Qual

November 2024

USDA-ARS, Soil Drainage Research Unit, Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Phosphorus (P) loading from tile-drained agricultural lands is linked to water quality and aquatic ecosystem degradation. The RZWQM2-P model was developed to simulate the fate and transport of P in soil-water-plant systems, especially in tile-drained croplands. Comprehensive evaluation and application of RZWQM2-P, however, remains limited.

Background: Multi-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) survive in hospital drains in traps that contain water and may ascend into the sink because of splashes, or biofilm growth.

Aim: To investigate whether the 'Tuba Drain' (TD) a long, bent, continually descending copper tube between the sink outlet and the trap prevents the ascent of bacteria.

Methods: After initial laboratory tests confirmed that the TD prevented bacteria in the U-bend from splashing upwards into the sink outlet, TDs were assessed in a randomized, blinded trial in a hospital outpatient department built in 2019.
