Sodium-oxygen batteries have received a significant amount of research attention as a low-overpotential alternative to lithium-oxygen. However, the critical factors governing the composition and morphology of the discharge products in Na-O cells are not thoroughly understood. Here we show that oxygen containing functional groups at the air electrode surface have a substantial role in the electrochemical reaction mechanisms in Na-O cells. Our results show that the presence of functional groups at the air-electrode surface conducts the growth mechanism of discharge products toward a surface-mediated mechanism, forming a conformal film of products at the electrode surface. In addition, oxygen reduction reaction at hydrophilic surfaces more likely passes through a peroxide pathway, which results in the formation of peroxide-based discharge products. Moreover, in-line X-ray diffraction combined with solid state Na NMR results indicate the instability of discharge products against carbonaceous electrodes. The findings of this study help to explain the inconsistency among various reports on composition and morphology of the discharge products in Na-O cells and allow the precise control over the discharge products.

Abiotic H and hydrocarbons are found in fluids discharged from ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal vents. Beneath the hydrothermal vents, abiotic H and hydrocarbons can be formed by serpentinization reactions and Fischer-Tropsch-type hydrocarbon-forming reactions, respectively, over ultramafic rocks. However, the source rocks that form abiotic H and hydrocarbons may extend to broader subsurface rocks.

This study investigates the discharge of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into natural waters, highlighting a significant correlation with regional human activities. Despite the complexity of assessing factors influencing PPCPs sources, it remains underexplored. By conducting an extensive literature review of seven categories of PPCPs in WWTPs across five typical regions of China, the study reveals both similarities and disparities in PPCPs composition.

While thermoelectric conversion by a thermocapacitive cycle has been considered a promising green technology for low-grade heat recovery, our study finds that its practical feasibility is overestimated. During thermal charging, the coexistence and dynamic competition between thermal-induced voltage rise and self-discharge lead to the limitations of the thermocapacitive cycle. Therefore, the operational conditions in the charge-heat-discharge steps seriously restrict the thermal charging performance.

Sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) and their composites are promising for heavy metal adsorption, yet current SNPs often lack surface S, leading to low affinity toward heavy metal and ease of aggregation. Here, we report a simple light-driven method for facile prepare SNPs with surfaces enriched with S and in-situ load them onto graphene oxide (GO) to fabricate GO-S composites. Under illumination, the O generated by photosensitizer phloxine B was able to oxidize S into elemental SNPs.

The accelerated growth of the economy and advancements in medical technology have led to the discharge of a diverse range of organic pollutants into water sources. Recent investigations into water treatment have demonstrated the potential for integrating photocatalysis with techniques such as photocatalytic persulfate activation and the Photo-Fenton process for more efficient wastewater management. Iron-based photocatalysts responsive to visible light offer several advantages, including non-toxicity, safety, affordability, and excellent chemical and optical properties.
