Three different forms of Linderae Radix were evaluated by HPLC combined with NIRS fingerprint. The Linderae Radix was divided into three forms, including spindle root, straight root and old root. The HPLC fingerprints were developed, and then cluster analysis was performed using the SPSS software. The near-infrared spectra of Linderae Radix was collected, and then established the discriminant analysis model. The similarity values of the spindle root and straight root all were above 0.990, while the similarity value of the old root was less than 0.850. Two forms of Linderae Radix were obviously divided into three parts by the NIRS model and Cluster analysis. The results of HPLC and FT-NIR analysis showed the quality of Linderae Radix old root was different from the spindle root and straight root. The combined use of the two methods could identify different forms of Linderae Radix quickly and accurately.

Glaucic acid isolated from the root of Lindera glauca, was investigated by the biotransformation methods via the endophytic fungi, resulting in the production of five new glausesquiterpenes A-E (1-5), along with a known analogue 6. Their structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic methods and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. In the bioassays, glausesquiterpene A (1) showed good inhibitory activity of NO production in LPS-activated RAW 264.

Four undescribed butanolides, linderangolides A-D (1-4), along with four known congeners, lincomolide A (5), (-)-epilitsenolide C2 (6), (-)-epilitsenolide C1 (7) and litseakolide H (8), were isolated from the roots of Lindera angustifolia. The planar structures of 1-4 were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analyses, the relative and absolute configurations of 1-4 were determined by the NOESY spectra and the comparison of calculated and experimental ECD. The cytotoxic activities of all isolated compounds were tested, 4 showed inhibitory activity against SGC-7 cells with IC value of 6.

Background: Linderae Radix (LR), the dried root of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm., is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that has been used for thousands of years for promoting Qi circulation, soothing the liver, and treating diarrhea and dysentery. Previous studies have found that ethanol extract of LR plays an anti-ulcerative colitis (UC) role by regulating Th17/ Treg balance.
