Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced to the dental profession at the beginning of the new millennium and has become an integral part of dental practice, especially within the surgical specialties. With advances in technology and the introduction of new-generation digital detectors, the concomitant increase in pixel resolution provided the ability to discern fine details of the anatomy. This article focuses on the methodology of CBCT interpretation and reporting. Details of reviewing the volume thoroughly are described with relevant citations. The article summarizes the overall methodical interpretation of CBCT data that is essential to every dentist who uses the technology.

Aim: Successful deep brain stimulation (DBS) requires precise electrode placement. However, brain shift from loss of cerebrospinal fluid or pneumocephalus still affects aim accuracy. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) provides absolute spatial sensitivity, and intraoperative cone-beam computed tomography (iCBCT) has become increasingly used in DBS procedures.

Auto-collimation diffraction of two-dimensional metal-dielectric grating with azimuth angle of 45°.

College of Physics & Optoelectronic Engineering, Jinan University, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510632, China.

Grating under auto-collimation configuration with polarization-independent high diffraction efficiency plays an important role in the displacement measurement system, spectral beam combining system and so on. In this paper, we proposed, for the first time, a reflective two-dimensional metal-dielectric grating of which the (-1, -1) order beam is diffracted back along the input light direction, when the incident azimuth angle is 45°. With optimized structure, the (-1, -1) order diffraction efficiencies of transverse electric polarization (TE) and transverse magnetic polarization (TM) are 95.

Background: The lingula is an important landmark for conducting certain mandibular surgery procedures, such as sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO). The purpose of this study was to investigate the location of the lingula in both horizontal and vertical planes among four different shapes of the mandibular ramus.

Methods: Ninety patients, 60 female and 30 male, underwent cone beam computed tomography scans to evaluate the measurements of the lingula tip (Li) in relation to the anterior border (AB), posterior border (PB), sigmoid notch (SN), and inferior border (IB) of the ramus.

This investigation aimed to develop a radiographic 3D cephalometric index to grade severity of dentofacial deformity in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and to perform a validation against expert evaluations. Data were collected from a population-based Nordic JIA cohort of 240 patients that received a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan approximately 17 years after onset of JIA. The cohort was randomized into two groups: A baseline group for establishing the index (n = 210) and a test group (n = 30).

Background: Dedicated breast computed tomography (bCT) systems offer detailed imaging for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. As new bCT generations are developed, it is important to evaluate their imaging performance and dose efficiency to understand differences over previous models.

Purpose: To characterize the imaging performance and dose efficiency of a second-generation (GEN2) bCT system and compare them to those of a first-generation (GEN1) system.
