A range of amphiphilic sorbitan ethers has been synthesized in two steps from sorbitan following an acetalization/hydrogenolysis sequence. These sorbitan ethers and the acetal intermediates have been evaluated as antimicrobials against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. No antimicrobial activity was observed for Gram-negative bacteria. However, the compounds bearing a linear dodecyl chain exhibit antimicrobial activity (MIC as low as 8μg/mL) against Gram-positive bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. Encouraged by these preliminary results, dodecyl sorbitan was tested against a range of resistant strains and was found to be active against vancomycin-, methicillin- and daptomycin-resistant strains (MIC=32-64μg/mL).

Objective: Basic therapy is an integral part of the treatment of chronic skin diseases. However, the formulation of skin products should be analysed with respect to the physical stability and tolerance by the patients before applying them to diseased skin. In particular, the suitability of the formulation for use on damaged skin should be taken into consideration so that no exacerbation of the condition is caused.

Surfactant-Polymer Complexation and Competition on Drug Nanocrystal Surfaces Control Crystallinity.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

July 2024

Department of Chemical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139, United States.

Nanosizing drug crystals has emerged as a successful approach to enabling oral bioavailability, as increasing drug crystal surface area improves dissolution kinetics and effective solubility. Recently, bottom-up methods have been developed to directly assemble nanosized crystals by leveraging polymer and surfactant excipients during crystallization to control crystal size, morphology, and structure. However, while significant research has investigated how polymers and other single additives inhibit or promote crystallization in pharmaceutical systems, there is little work studying the mechanistic interactions of multiple excipients on drug crystal structure and the extent of crystallinity, which can influence formulation performance.

Unveiling Coformulants in Plant Protection Products by LC-HRMS Using a Polyhydroxy Methacrylate Stationary Phase.

J Agric Food Chem

October 2023

Research group "Analytical Chemistry of Contaminants", Department of Chemistry and Physics, Research Centre for Mediterranean Intensive Agrosystems and Agri-Food Biotechnology (CIAMBITAL), University of Almería, Agri-Food Campus of International Excellence, ceiA3, 04120 Almería, Spain.

A polyhydroxy methacrylate-based stationary reversed phase was used for the determination of coformulants in 20 plant protection products (PPPs). These samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography coupled to Q-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-Q-Orbitrap-HRMS) in full-scan MS and data-dependent acquisition (ddMS) modes. A total of 92 coformulants were tentatively identified in these formulations by nontargeted and unknown analyses.

Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) has been the most widely used method to assess the integrity of the skin barrier and evaluate the irritation potential or the protective properties of topical products for many years. It detects the amount of water that diffuses across the stratum corneum (SC) to the external environment. As one of the most important functions of the skin is to keep water inside the body, an increase in TEWL is used to indicate the skin's impaired barrier function.

Interplay between bulk aggregates, surface properties and foam stability of nonionic surfactants.

Adv Colloid Interface Sci

April 2022

Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, University of Sofia, 1 James Bourchier Ave., 1164 Sofia, Bulgaria. Electronic address:

In our previous study (Mustan et al. 2021) we showed that foams formed from two oil-soluble nonionic surfactants (Span 60 and Brij 72) can remain stable for more than 10 days at room temperature at high sugar concentration. The major aim of the current study is to reveal the interrelation between the surfactant structure and foam stability by investigating 6 polyoxyethelene alkyl ethers and 12 fatty acid esters with a wide variety of hydrophobic chain lengths (C12; C16; C18 and C18:1) and hydrophilic head-groups (sorbitol, glycerol, sucrose).
