We propose a compact phase-shifting radial shearing interferometer based on a pixelated micro-retarder array (MRA). The MRA is made of a thin birefringence plate, and is composed of identical units that have pixels of four different thicknesses. We demonstrate that pixelated phase delay between two shearing beams can be introduced by applying the fast axis of birefringence plate in the horizontal or vertical orientation. We also present an approach to extract the wavefront under test with random phase shift, which dramatically reduces the machining difficulty of the MRA. The feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method are further validated through our numerical analysis. With the advantages of vibration immunity, simultaneous phase stepping, and broad spectral range, the presented interferometer is expected to be of potential use in a variety of applications, such as the detection of moving objects and dynamic processes.

This work investigated the CrNiMo stainless steel using laser selective melting (SLM) technology and explored the effect of the tempering temperature on the microstructure and properties. After the tempering treatment, the quenched martensite transformed from a metastable to steady state, and residual austenite was formed. The results indicated that the elongation of the transverse specimen showed an upward trend as the tempering temperature increased, while the elongation of the longitudinal specimen first increased and then decreased.

We measure the response of open-cell polyurethane foams filled with a dense suspension of fumed silica particles in polyethylene glycol at compression speeds spanning several orders of magnitude. The gradual compressive stress increase of the composite material indicates the existence of shear rate gradients in the interstitial suspension caused by wide distributions in pore sizes in the disordered foam network. The energy dissipated during compression scales with an effective internal shear rate, allowing for the collapse of three data sets for different pore-size foams.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit reversible shape morphing behavior when cycled above their nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature. During extrusion-based 3D printing, LCE inks are subjected to coupled shear and extensional flows that can be harnessed to spatially control the alignment of their nematic director along prescribed print paths. Here, we combine experiment and modeling to elucidate the effects of ink composition, nozzle geometry, and printing parameters on director alignment.

Steak samples were collected from the longissimus lumborum muscles of beef carcasses (Canada AA, n = 1505; Canada AAA, n = 1363) over a 3-year period. Steaks were aged for 14 d, and tenderness was determined by slice shear force (SSF). Metabolomic profiling of beef samples was performed using rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS) (N = 2853).

Impeller radial gap is one of important parts within a blood pump, which may affect the hemodynamics and hemocompatibility. In this study, computational fluid dynamics method was performed to evaluate the impact of radial gap sizes. The volume of scalar shear stress decreased with radial gap sizes increasing.
