This paper examines the potential of poetry as a resource within mental health nurse pre-registration education. There has long been a debate as to whether the art or the science of nursing should be foregrounded within pre-registration education, especially in the UK within recent years as the latest Nursing and Midwifery Council's standards of pre-registration education appear to have shifted the focus towards the acquisition of skills, giving less consideration to the holistic transformatory process of education. The paper uses the conceptualisation of education by Beista, who proposes that education can be considered in relation to the three domains of qualification, socialisation and subjectification.

The importance of art and humanities in mental health is widely recognised, and consumption and creation of poetry, prose, drama and the plastic arts are now considered to be relevant knowledge-generating and therapeutic activities. However, literary and art criticism remain at the margins. By contrast, in his two 'Logics of Discovery' papers, psychiatrist, psychopathologist and psychotherapist Giovanni Stanghellini brings to bear on clinical discovery and the healing alliance cultural historian Aby Warburg's approach to images (specifically, his ) and philosopher Giorgio Agamben's analysis of the linguistic phenomenon of parataxis in Friedrich Hölderlin's poetry.

Cinema, a form of art in and of itself, has also taken an interest in the heart. Recently, a TV series dedicated to this organ has combined historical research on the groundbreaking development of the possibility of curing it with the romantic element of the love affair that, in a figurative sense, passes through the same organ.
