A nonlinear-optical crystal BaZn(BO) (BZBO) is obtained that is constructed with [Zn(BO)O] units bridged by planar BO groups along the a axis based on the flexibility of the BO and ZnO groups. The distance between adjacent [Zn(BO)O] layers in BZBO is 5.07 Å, which is much shorter than those of KBeBOF, BaZn(BO), and NaCsBeB5O. The smaller interlayer spacing and stronger bond between neighboring layers of BZBO contribute to a better growth habit than those of the other three. Also, with the cooperation of two kinds of nonlinear-optical active groups, BO and ZnO, BZBO exhibits a large second-harmonic-generation response of about 2.6 times that of KDP.

Zonal Characteristics of Collagen Ultrastructure and Responses to Mechanical Loading in Articular Cartilage.

Acta Biomater

Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, University of Exeter, UK. Electronic address:

The biomechanical properties of articular cartilage arise from a complex bioenvironment comprising hierarchically organised collagen networks within the extracellular matrix (ECM) that interact with the proteoglycan-rich interstitial fluid. This network features a depth-dependent fibril organisation across different zones. Understanding how collagen fibrils respond to external loading is key to elucidating the mechanisms behind lesion and managing degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with spontaneous polarization can exhibit large second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) effects. Here, we present a series of stable distorted monolayers by using first-principles calculations and lattice vibration analysis. The structural distortion leads to a lower polar symmetry, giving rise to intrinsic ferroelectricity with a Curie point up to room temperature.

Efficient Second Harmonic Generation via Plasmonic-Photonic Mode Matching in Hybrid Waveguide.

Hybrid nonlinear plasmonic waveguides, characterized by a small mode area and large nonlinear susceptibility, present an intriguing and practical platform for the minimization of nonlinear photonic devices. Nevertheless, the intrinsic Ohmic loss associated with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and modal dispersion imposes constraints on the effective interaction length and, consequently, the ultimate efficiency of nonlinear processes. In this study, we demonstrate an efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) within a hybrid plasmonic waveguide by leveraging SPP-like modes at the fundamental wave and photonic-like modes at the SHG under phase matching conditions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) musculoskeletal conditions are a leading contributor to disability worldwide. This fact is often somewhat overlooked, since musculoskeletal conditions are less likely to be associated with mortality. Nonetheless, treatments, therapies and management of these conditions are extremely costly to national healthcare systems.

Lithium niobate (LiNbO) has shown great potential for applications in nonlinear metasurfaces, thanks to its large second-order nonlinear coefficients and high integration capabilities. Optical resonances play a crucial role in further enhancing the nonlinear optical responses of LiNbO metasurfaces (LNMS). In this study, both numerically and experimentally, we designed and fabricated a metasurface structure that supports toroidal dipole (TD) resonance to enhance second-harmonic generation (SHG).
