Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/parkinsonism dementia complex (ALS/PDC) is an endemic disease observed in the Kii peninsula, Guam, and Papua. We report a case of a 76-year old man with ALS/PDC of the Kii peninsula of Japan (Kii ALS/PDC). The patient was born and grew up in the Kii peninsula. He moved out at age three, and developed symptoms 73years later. He showed pyramidal sign, parkinsonian symptoms, and mildly impaired cognitive function. I-metaiodobenzylguanidine myocardial scintigraphy showed decreased cardiac sympathetic nerve function, and dopamine transporter single photon emission computed tomography imaging showed decreased I-N-ω-fluoropropyl-2β-carbomethoxy3β-(4-iodophenyl) nortropane accumulation. Cerebral blood flow showed hypoperfusion. Positron emission tomography showed widespread tau deposition in his brain. This is a migration case of Kii ALS/PDC with the shortest stay in the endemic area and the longest delay to develop the disease, indicating a genetic factor for the disease development in a considerable degree.

We investigate multimodal seismicity by analyzing it as the result of multiple seismic sources. We examine three case studies: the Redoubt and Spurr regions in Alaska, where volcanic and subduction-related seismicity occur, and the Kii Peninsula in Japan, where shallow and deep earthquakes are clearly separated. To understand this phenomenon, we perform spatial, temporal, and magnitude analyses.

Habitat fragmentation reduces gene flow, causing genetic differentiation and diversity loss in endangered species through genetic drift and inbreeding. However, the impact of habitat fragmentation on ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi remains unexplored, despite their critical roles in forest ecosystems. Here, we investigated the population genetic structure and the demographic history of Rhizopogon togasawarius, the ECM fungus specifically colonizing the host tree Pseudotsuga japonica, across its entire distribution range (>200 km).

A cluster of cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) exists in the southern part of the Kii Peninsula in Japan. Although both genetic and environmental factors are thought to be causative, the critical cause of this cluster has not been identified. C9orf72 is the most common genetic factor in both familial and sporadic C9orf72-related ALS in people of European ancestry, but it is rare among Japanese populations.

Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder characterized by reduced motility, depression and dementia. Guamanian parkinsonism dementia with amyotrophic sclerosis is a local case of Parkinson's disease reported in the Western Pacific Islands of Guam and Rota as well as in the Kii Peninsula of Japan. A previous genetic study has suggested that Guamanian parkinsonism is attributable to a variant of the TRPM7 gene, which encodes for melastatin-related transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels.
