Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) mass spectrometry commonly uses helium as the DART gas. With the looming helium shortage, other gases are being evaluated for DART. Nitrogen is inexpensive and readily available, making it a desirable alternative.

Nitrogen multiple-breath washout is an established technique to assess functional residual capacity and ventilation inhomogeneity in the lung. Accurate measurement of gas concentrations is essential for the appropriate calculation of clinical outcomes. We investigated the accuracy of oxygen and carbon dioxide gas sensor measurements used for the indirect calculation of nitrogen concentration in a commercial multiple-breath washout device (Exhalyzer D, Eco Medics AG, Duernten, Switzerland) and its impact on functional residual capacity and lung clearance index.

Livestock wastewater (LW) typically contains a substantial amount of NH that can potentially be recovered and used in fertilizers or chemicals. In an attempt to recover NH from LW, a novel electrochemical approach using a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) was developed and its efficacy was demonstrated in this study. The GDE-based electrochemical device, when operated at an air-flow rate of 20 mL/min, was free of back-diffusion flux, which is a fatal drawback of any membrane-based NH separation approach.

Measurement of lung clearance index (LCI) by multiple breath washout (MBW) is a sensitive method for monitoring lung disease in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). To compare nitrogen MBW (N-MBW) and sulfur hexafluoride MBW (SF-MBW), we connected these two gas analysis systems in series to obtain truly simultaneous measurements, with no differences other than the gas used. Nonsmoking healthy controls (HC) and subjects with CF were recruited at two institutions.
