Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a rescue therapy in patients with severe cardiopulmonary failure. Often, cannulation is done emergently and the femoral vessels are most readily accessible for venous and arterial access. Unfortunately, complications with arterial femoral access can lead to devastating complications, primarily related to limb ischemia. A coordinated protocol of diligent limb examination by trained intensive care unit staff, near infrared spectroscopy monitoring of limbs, and placement of a distal perfusion catheter at the time of femoral cannulation or when signs of ischemia develop, can lead to successful limb salvage.

Calcium ions (Ca) are important second messengers and are known to participate in cold signal transduction. In the current study, we characterized a Ca-binding protein gene, VamCP1, from the extremely cold-tolerant grape species Vitis amurensis. VamCP1 expression varied among organs but was highest in leaves following cold treatment, peaking 24 h after treatment onset.

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are one of the most promising energy conversion devices due to their high efficiency and zero emission; however, two major challenges, high cost and short lifetime, have been hindering the commercialization of fuel cells. Achieving low-Pt or non-precious metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is one of the main research ideas in this field. In this review, the degradation mechanism of Pt-based catalysts is firstly explained and elucidated, and then five strategies are suggested for the reduction of Pt usage without loss of activity and durability: modulation of metal-support interactions, optimization of local ionomers and mass transport, modulation of composition, modulation of structure, and multi-site synergistic effects.

Current pharmacological interventions for hepatic IRI are inadequate. In this study, we identified ginsenoside Rk2 (Rk2), a rare dehydroprotopanaxadiol saponin, as a promising agent against hepatic IRI through high-throughput screening.

The bacterial infection and oxidative wound microenvironment delay skin repair and necessitate intelligent wound dressings to enable scarless wound healing. The immunoglobulin of yolk (IgY) exhibits immunotherapeutic potential for the potential treatment of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, while cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO NPs) could scavenge superoxide dismutase (SOD) and inflammation. The overarching objective of this study was to incorporate IgY and CeO NPs into poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide)/gelatin (PLGA/Gel)-based dressings (P/G@IYCe) for infected skin repair.

There is a lack of clear guidance on whether to retain or remove a previously inserted supraglottic airway device (SAD) before eFONA. We aimed to study the effect of both neck extension and insertion of an SAD on sagittal cricothyroid membrane (CTM) height.
