Published: January 2011

The tetradecanuclear Fe pivalate nanocluster [FeO(OH)₄(Piv)], comprising a new type of metal oxide framework, has been solvothermally synthesized from a hexanuclear iron pivalate precursor in dichlormethane/acetonitrile solution. Magnetic measurements indicate the presence of very strong antiferromagnetic interactions in the cluster core.

The protection of steel based on microbial biomineralization has emerged as a novel and eco-friendly strategy for corrosion control. However, the molecular basis of the biomineralization process in mineralization bacteria remains largely unexplored. We previously reported that EPS+ strain provides protection against steel corrosion by forming a hybrid biomineralization film.

The growing demand for environmentally friendly semiconductors that can be tailored and developed easily is compelling researchers and technologists to design inherently bio-compatible, self-assembling nanostructures with tunable semiconducting characteristics. Peptide-based bioinspired materials exhibit a variety of supramolecular morphologies and have the potential to function as organic semiconductors. Such biologically or naturally derived peptides with intrinsic semiconducting characteristics create new opportunities for sustainable biomolecule-based optoelectronics devices.

Anodes play an important role in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and have received much attention as ideal carbon anode materials for meeting the needs for high-rate capability, long-term stability, and high energy density. In this study, a π-extended oligo(perylene) diimide (PTN) is synthesized by using a solvothermal reaction with NH·HO as the decarboxylation reaction catalyst and perylene anhydride as the precursor. A nanocarbon fiber framework can be produced through self-assembly during the carbonization process of π-extended perylene diimide oligomers.

Biochemistry Department, Western University, London, Canada.

Chloroplast genomes present an alternative strategy for large-scale engineering of photosynthetic eukaryotes. Prior to our work, the chloroplast genomes of (204 kb) and (140 kb) had been cloned using bacterial and yeast artificial chromosome (BAC/YAC) libraries, respectively. These methods lack design flexibility as they are reliant upon the random capture of genomic fragments during BAC/YAC library creation; additionally, both demonstrated a low efficiency (≤ 10%) for correct assembly of the genome in yeast.
