Background: The risk for multicentricity of pancreatic adenocarcinoma remains unclear and the question whether pancreaticoduodenectomy represents sufficient oncological treatment for patients with ductal adenocarcinoma of the head of the pancreas needs further investigation.

Patients And Methods: Clinicopathological data of patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic adenocarcinoma between 2005 and 2015 were assessed and the incidence of tumor multicentricity among patients who required salvage pancreatectomy within 90 postoperative days was evaluated.

Results: Pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed in 1,005 patients. Sixty-two patients (6%) suffered a major postoperative complication (pancreatic fistula/anastomotic leak/bleeding) after resection of the head of the pancreas, requiring salvage pancreatectomy. Histological examination of the pancreatic remnant in patients with ductal adenocarcinoma (n=19) revealed multicentric carcinoma in two patients, resulting in an incidence of 11% for tumor multicentricity. Preoperative cross-sectional imaging failed to identify tumor multicentricity in these patients. Additionally, two patients with pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia and two with neuroendocrine tumor were identified.

Conclusion: The incidence of previously undetected multicentric adenocarcinoma among patients undergoing salvage pancreatectomy in our study was surprisingly high. This finding suggests that the role of total pancreatectomy for pancreatic head cancer, as well as the current strategies for postoperative tumor surveillance, should be re-evaluated in order to provide the best oncological approach and prolonged survival for patients with ductal adenocarcinoma.

Background And Objectives: Recently, reduction of transcallosal inhibition by contralateral navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS) improved neurorehabilitation of glioma patients with new postoperative paresis. This multicentric study examines the effect of postoperative nrTMS in brain tumor patients to treat surgery-related upper extremity paresis.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of two randomized and three one-arm studies in brain tumor patients with new/progressive postoperative paresis.

Introduction: While intensive protocols in onco-haematology have improved survival rates for patients with haematological malignancies, they have also resulted in an increased incidence of infection associated with therapy-induced immunosuppression (including chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia; FN). The occurrence of FN, associated with high morbidity and mortality, necessitates broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, occasioning delayed chemotherapy and resulting in a loss of opportunity for the patient. Considering that without an identified pathogen, a 10% mortality rate can ensue, documentation is essential to the optimisation of antibiotic therapy.

Objective: The aim of this study was to report the outcome and prognosis of canine patients treated medically or surgically for rectal plasmacytomas and to identify factors associated with recurrence, mortality, or progression to multiple myeloma.

Methods: The databases of 7 referral hospitals were reviewed. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards analysis were used to determine the association of a range of variables with recurrence and progression-free interval for the surgically treated patients.

Objectives: To assess the feasibility of trial recruitment and confirm that retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy (RRPN) has the same oncological efficacy as transperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy (TRPN), with time advantages and less peri-operative morbidity, in a randomised controlled trial (RCT).

Patients And Methods: The study was designed as a single-centre, open-label, feasibility RCT. Patients with suspected localised renal cell carcinoma referred for robotic partial nephrectomy were randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive either TRPN or RRPN.

Multicentric Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of Bilateral Eyelids.

Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg

January 2025

Ophthalmic Surgeons and Consultants of Ohio, Eye Center of Columbus, Columbus, Ohio.

A 59-year-old female patient presented with a purple, fluid-filled lesion on her left upper eyelid that contained a solid component. Excisional biopsy revealed a diagnosis of mucinous adenocarcinoma. Extensive oncological workup was negative for a distant primary tumor or metastasis and confirmed a diagnosis of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma.
