In this paper, nano-hybrid particles of Ag@FeO based on O-carboxymethylchitosan were successfully synthesized using different reducing agents (NaBH, sucrose) and without reducing agent. The smallest silver nanoparticles were those prepared without reducing agent (∼5±3nm). The average size of silver particles prepared with NaBH is around 5-15nm, and for samples prepared with sucrose, the average particle size is 10-25nm. The magnetization curves are roughly reversible, indicating that γ-FeO nanoparticles transit to a superparamagnetic state. Nanocomposites subjected to antimicrobial tests showed great antimicrobial activity against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria, and good activity against the yeast Candida albicans and resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial behavior as a function of time was investigated in microbial growth kinetics, and the best nanocomposite was the one without reducing agent, which completely inhibited microbial growth for 48h.

Dysregulation of GABAergic inhibition is associated with pathological pain. Consequently, enhancement of GABAergic transmission represents a potential analgesic strategy. However, therapeutic potential of current GABA agonists and modulators is limited by unwanted side effects.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline, extracellular amyloid-β (Aβ) plaque accumulation, and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles. Recent efforts to find effective therapies have increased interest in natural compounds with multifaceted effects on AD pathology. This study explores natural compounds for their potential to mitigate AD pathology using molecular docking, ADME screening, and assays, with ruscogenin─a steroidal sapogenin from emerging as a promising candidate.

Non-conformance with antibiotic withdrawal period guidelines represents a food safety concern, with potential for antibiotic toxicities and allergic reactions as well as selecting for antibiotic resistance. In the Kenyan domestic pig market, conformance with antibiotic withdrawal periods is not a requirement of government legislation and evidence suggests that antibiotic residues may frequently be above recommended limits. In this study, we sought to explore enablers of and barriers to conformance with antibiotic withdrawal periods for pig farms supplying a local independent abattoir in peri-urban Nairobi.

This study investigates the protective effects of resveratrol (RSV) against heat stress (HS)-induced testicular injury in rats. Climate change has exacerbated heat stress, particularly affecting male fertility by impairing testicular function and sexual behavior. A total of 32 rats were allocated into four experimental groups: control, RSV control, HS control, and RSV + HS.

Understanding the impact of oxidative modification on protein structure and functions is essential for developing therapeutic strategies to combat macromolecular damage and cell death. However, selectively inducing oxidative modifications in proteins remains challenging. Herein we demonstrate that [V6O13{(OCH2)3CCH2OH}2]2- (V6-OH) hybrid metal-oxo cluster can be used for selective protein oxidative cleavage and modifications.
