Shewanella oneidensis, a Gram-negative γ-proteobacterium with an extensive redox capacity, possesses four old yellow enzyme (OYE) homologs. Of these, Shewanella yellow enzyme 4 (SYE4) is implicated in resistance to oxidative stress. Here, we present a series of high-resolution crystal structures for SYE4 in the oxidized and reduced states, and in complex with phenolic ligands and the nitro-aromatic explosive picric acid. The structures unmask new features, including the identification of a binding platform for long-chain hydrophobic molecules. Furthermore, we present the first structural observation of a hydride-Meisenheimer complex of picric acid with a flavoenzyme. Overall, our study exposes the binding promiscuity of SYE4 toward a variety of electrophilic substrates and is consistent with a general detoxification function for SYE4.

The Old Yellow Enzyme from Ferrovum sp. JA12 (FOYE) displays an unusual thermal stability for an enzyme isolated from a mesophilic organism. We determined the crystal structure of this enzyme and performed bioinformatic characterization to get insights into its thermal stability.

A novel analytical method was designed and developed that exhibited ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), fluorescence (FL), and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) signals for straightforward and comprehensive determination of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) using polyethylenimine-functionalized silver nanoparticles (PEI-Ag NPs). Through a facile one-step experiment, and NaOH assisted, in an aqueous solution of 100 ℃ for 40 min PEI reacted with AgNO to generate PEI-Ag NPs with a yellow color and weak blue fluorescence. Interestingly, phenylacetaldehyde (PAA), a specific product of MAO-B, causes significant enhancement of the three optical signals of UV-Vis, FL, and RRS.

Different speciation of phosphorus in the hyporheic zone exhibit various release potentials, so as to control the phosphorus content in the overlying water. The process of phosphorus release under the multi-factor coupling of rivers is crucial for understanding the element cycle in complex environments. In this paper, the Weihe River in China was used as a case study to analyze the phosphorus speciation and distribution of overlying water and sediments in the hyporheic zone, and the phosphorus release process of sediments under the coupling of multiple factors.

Salmonella is a common food-borne pathogen that is highly pathogenic and infectious, causing serious harm to livestock breeding and food safety. Uncovering the mechanisms of Salmonella infection and immune evasion can effectively prevent Salmonella contamination of livestock and poultry food. Here, small RNA sequencing results showed that exosomes produced by naïve murine macrophages RAW 264.
