Ethereal C-O Bond Cleavage Mediated by Ni(0)-Ate Complex: A DFT Study.

Published: October 2017

Density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the mechanism of Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions involving organo-lithium and -zinc reagents through ethereal C-O bond cleavage. Based on this work, together with our previous mechanistic study on etheric Kumada-Tamao reaction, we identify and characterize a novel catalytic cycle for cross-coupling mediated by Ni(0)-ate complex.

The systematic nucleophilic functionalization of the cationic pentaphosphole ligand complex [Cp*Fe(η4-P5Me)][OTf] (A) with group 16/17 nucleophiles is reported. This method represents a highly reliable and versatile strategy for the design of novel transition-metal complexes featuring twofold substituted end-deck cyclo-P5 ligands, bearing unprecedented hetero-element substituents. By the reaction of A with classical group 16 nucleophiles, complexes of the type [Cp*Fe(η4-P5MeE)] (E = OEt (1), OtBu (2), SPh (3), SePh (4)) are obtained.

Borenium ions have attracted significant attention in organic transformations due to their strong Lewis acidity. The reported borenium ions are often stabilized by sterically demanding substituents and strong coordination bonds. Herein, we have synthesized a small steric borenium-equivalent NHBHOTf and subjected it to the exhaustive reduction of a carboxylic functional group to a methyl group, which shows broad functional group tolerance.

The reduction of aryl carboxylates to methyl and allyl arene was attained using a well-defined cobalt catalyst. This catalytic transformation employs only a sub-stoichiometric amount of base, and diethylsilane as a reductant. Catalytic activation of the Si-H bond of the silanes, C-O bond of the ester, and silyl ether intermediates by cobalt is crucial to achieving exhaustive reduction.

An organophotocatalyzed approach for the chemoselective dealkylation of phenols is developed. This method demonstrates exceptional selectivity toward the cleavage of phenolic ethers over equivalent aliphatic ethers and alkyl benzoates, presenting a broad range of functional group sustainability. This strategy also enables selective debenzylation of phenols in the presence of reduction-sensitive functional groups.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) released by straw returning for decomposition interacts with selenium (Se) in soil, which affects the speciation distribution of Se and its bioavailability. However, the relative mechanisms involved are slightly understood. This study investigated the effects of straw-derived DOM on two levels of exogenous selenite (low-Se and high-Se treatments) in two types of soil with distinct pH.
