Objective: Because sympathetic nervous system activity plays a detrimental role in metabolic and cardiovascular health, this study compared the effects of a centrally acting sympatholytic agent, the effects of a weight loss (WL) program using a low-calorie diet, and the effects of a combination of both.
Methods: Young (18-30 years) male subjects with overweight (BMI > 25 kg/m ) were allocated to a WL program (n = 10), a moxonidine treatment course (M; n = 10, 0.4 mg/d), a combination of both (WL + M; n = 11), or to a control (C) group (n = 6) for 6 months. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), endothelial function, renal function (Cockcroft-Gault formula), and the metabolic profile were assessed before and after intervention.
Results: WL occurred in the WL and WL + M groups (-7.6 ± 1.9 kg, P < 0.001 in both). MSNA and systolic blood pressure decreased similarly in the WL, M, and WL + M groups (by ∼10 bursts/min, P < 0.001, and by ∼9 mm Hg, P < 0.05). All other parameters for the WL, C, and M groups remained unchanged. In the WL + M group, decreased total cholesterol (-0.78 ± 0.23 mmol/L, P < 0.001), decreased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-0.49 ± 0.16 mmol/L, P < 0.01), decreased insulin (-6.5 ± 2.8 mmol/L, P < 0.05), and attenuated glomerular hyperfiltration (-19 ± 5 mL/min, P < 0.01) occurred.
Conclusions: The combination of moxonidine with a WL program has beneficial effects on aspects of the metabolic profile and end organ damage in young males with overweight.

Aquaculture is one of the world's fastest-growing sectors in food production but with multiple challenges related to animal handling and infections. The disease caused by infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) leads to outbreaks of local epidemics, reducing animal welfare, and causing significant economic losses. The composition of feed has shifted from marine ingredients such as fish oil and fish meal towards a more plant-based diet causing reduced levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

Methane emissions from ruminant digestion contribute significantly to global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Members of the phylum Rhodophyta (red algae), particularly Asparagopsis sp., have shown promising results in reducing methane emissions in ruminants, due to their high content of halogenated methane analog compounds.

Insulin resistance and diabetes are associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) conditions, which are distinguished by metabolic dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a NAD-dependent deacetylase, is fundamental in regulating metabolic pathways, reducing inflammation, and improving antioxidant defenses. This is the first study to investigate the effects of SRT1720, a SIRT1 activator, in diabetic rats on a high-fat diet.

High-fat diet (HFD) consumption disrupts the gut microbiome, instigating metabolic disturbance, brain pathology, and cognitive decline via the gut-brain axis. Probiotic and prebiotic supplementation have been found to improve gut microbiome health, suggesting they could be effective in managing neurodegenerative disorders. This study explored the potential benefits of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus plantarum 20174 (L.

Surgical intervention is currently the primary treatment for hepatolithiasis; however, some patients still experience residual stones and high recurrence rates after surgery. Cholesterol metabolism seems to play an important role in hepatolithiasis pathogenesis. A high cholesterol diet is one of the significant reasons for the increasing incidence of hepatolithiasis.
