Strain measurement of 3D structured nanodevices by EBSD.

Published: January 2018

We present a new methodology to accurately measure strain magnitudes from 3D nanodevices using Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). Because the dimensions of features on these devices are smaller than the interaction volume for backscattered electrons, EBSD patterns from 3D nanodevices will frequently be the superposition of patterns from multiple material regions simultaneously. The effect of this superposition on EBSD strain measurement is demonstrated, along with an approach to separate EBSD patterns from these devices via subtraction. The subtraction procedure is applied to 33 nm wide SiGe lines, and it provides accurate strain magnitudes where the traditional EBSD strain analysis method undervalues the strain magnitude by an order of magnitude. The approach provides a strain measurement technique for nanoscale 3D structures that is high spatial resolution, nondestructive, and accurate.

A Fast-Pass, Desorption Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry Strategy for Untargeted Metabolic Phenotyping.

J Am Soc Mass Spectrom

Department of Chemistry, Center for Innovative Technology, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee 37235, United States.

Desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) provides direct analytical readouts of small molecules that can be used to characterize the metabolic phenotypes of genetically engineered bacteria. In an effort to accelerate the time frame associated with the screening of mutant libraries, we have developed a high-throughput DESI-MSI analytical workflow implementing a single raster line-scan strategy that facilitates the collection of location-resolved molecular information from engineered strains on a subminute time scale. Evaluation of this "Fast-Pass" DESI-MSI phenotyping workflow on analytical standards demonstrated the capability of acquiring full metabolic profiling information with a throughput of ∼40 s per sample.

Immunity against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can be induced through either infection with the virus or vaccination, providing protection against reinfection or reducing the risk of severe clinical outcomes. In this study, we recruited 172 volunteers who received different vaccination regimens, including 124 individuals who had recovered from breakthrough infections caused by the Omicron variant (27 with 2 doses, 49 with 3 doses, and 48 with 4 doses) and 48 healthy donors who did not experience breakthrough infections (all of whom received a fourth dose during the infection wave). We measured neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron BA.

Objective: To conduct a scoping review to summarize the state of the evidence on associations between participation in nonfood social safety net programs (eg, income assistance, housing assistance) in the United States and food- and nutrition insecurity-related outcomes.

Background: Food and nutrition insecurity are persistent public health challenges in the United States that increase chronic disease risk and exacerbate health disparities. Several food assistance programs enhance food and nutrition security.

Shear wave elastography reveals passive and active mechanics of triceps surae muscles in vivo: From shear modulus-ankle angle to stress-strain characteristics.

Experimental Biomechanics Group, Institute of Structural Mechanics and Dynamics in Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy, University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Characterizing individual muscle behavior is crucial for understanding joint function and adaptations to exercise, diseases, or aging. Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a promising tool for measuring the intrinsic material properties of muscle. This study assessed the passive and active shear modulus of the triceps surae muscle group in 14 volunteers (7 females, 25.

Unlabelled: Caliciviruses are significant agricultural and human pathogens that are poorly understood due to the dearth of molecular tools, including reporter systems. We report the development of a stable, faithful, and robust luciferase-based reporter system for a model calicivirus, murine norovirus (MNoV). Genetic insertion of a HiBiT tag, an 11 amino acid fragment of nanolucifersase, at the junction of the nonstructural proteins NS4 and NS5 yields infectious virus.
