Introduction: Vascular grafts, especially in paediatric cases, need to be durable. Common failures such as thrombosis are well documented with research efforts directed towards them. However, there are lesser known causes of graft failure, such as graft calcification, and these also require further research focus.

Report: A paediatric case is described in which a synthetic renovascular graft, implanted for mid-aortic syndrome, became calcified, necessitating surgical intervention to resolve graft malfunction. Significant calcification in the limb of a bifurcated polyethylene terephthalate graft was found to be the cause of resistant stenosis and refractory hypertension. Histology conducted on the explanted limb showed the presence of multinuclear giant cells, indicating a chronic foreign body response.

Discussion: Calcification of vascular grafts is probably more common than previously recognised. Stenosis typically resistant to angioplasty may result in the long term and thus leading to surgical intervention. In young children, this is suboptimal as these grafts need to last throughout adulthood. Explanted prosthetic grafts should be sent to specialist registries such as that in Strasbourg to be optimally assessed so that contributory factors can be identified.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases constitute one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Herbal medicines represent viable alternatives to the synthetic drugs currently employed in the control of hypertension. This study aimed to isolate and identify the chemical markers of and to investigate the antihypertensive and anti-matrix metalloproteinase (MMP2) activities of an aqueous extract of the leaves.

Idiopathic congenital abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. We present a case of a 3-year-old girl with a fusiform AAA measuring 19 mm in segments 4 and 5, associated with renal artery stenosis and severe hypertension. She was treated with three antihypertensive medications.

Article Synopsis
  • Cannabidiol (CBD) shows promise in treating cardiovascular issues related to neurodegenerative diseases and has previously shown benefits in reducing blood pressure and oxidative stress in acute studies.
  • This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of chronic CBD treatment specifically on rats with renovascular hypertension induced by a surgical model.
  • Results indicated that chronic CBD significantly lowered blood pressure, improved vascular function, and reduced harmful reactive oxygen species, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic option for cardiovascular problems in hypertension.*

Article Synopsis
  • - Diabetes is a widespread global health issue, currently affecting 425 million people, with projections rising to 700 million by 2025; it causes significant vascular complications, including atherosclerosis and kidney disease.
  • - Chronic complications of diabetes lead to serious conditions such as end-stage renal disease and are fueled by factors like inflammation and insulin resistance, which worsen cardiovascular issues and organ failure.
  • - New therapeutic strategies focus on resolving inflammation through specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), aiming to improve outcomes in diabetic-related cardiovascular and renal complications, backed by experimental and human studies.
