Studies have shown that fluorescent agents demarcate tumor from surrounding brain tissue and offer intraoperative guidance during resection. However, visualization of fluorescence signal from tumor below the surgical surface or through the appearance of blood in the surgical field is challenging. We have previously described red light imaging techniques for estimating fluorescent depths in turbid media. In this study, we evaluate these methods over a broader range of fluorophore concentrations, and investigate the ability to resolve multiple fluorescent emissions in the same plane or at different depths along the axis of imaging. A tungsten halogen lamp is used as a broadband white light source for reflectance imaging. Fluorescence from Alexa Fluor 647 is excited with a 635 nm diode laser. Reflectance and fluorescence spectral data are gathered between 670 and 720 nm with the use of a liquid crystal tunable filter and recorded on a sCMOS camera. Results show that two fluorescent emissions can be resolved within 2 mm if they are in the same plane or within 3 mm if they are at different depths along the axis of imaging up to 6 mm below the surface.

The accumulation of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) in macrophages leads to the formation of foam cells and atherosclerosis development. Reducing the uptake of oxLDL in macrophages decreases the incidence and progression of atherosclerosis. Four distinct single-strand DNA sequences, namely, AP07, AP11, AP25, and AP29, were selected that demonstrated specific binding to distinct regions of oxidized apolipoprotein B100 (apoB100; the protein component of oxLDL) with low HDOCK scores.

In this study, a novel nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dot/oxidized gum arabic-gelatin-based fluorescent probe (NAH) was prepared using gelatin (GL) and gum arabic (AG) biomolecules. The primary network structure of this hydrogel consisted of polyacrylamide (PAM), while a secondary network structure was constructed between oxidized gum arabic and gelatin through the reaction of the Schiff base, which significantly enhanced the mechanical properties, the stress and strain of NAH reached 266.47 KPa and 2175.

Chiral organic molecules with a complementing π-structure are highly desired to obtain materials with good semiconducting properties and pronounced chirality effects in the visible region. Herein, we introduce a novel design strategy to achieve an axially chiral and rigid perylene bisimide (PBI) dye by attaching the chirality-inducing 2,2'-biphenoxy moiety at one side of the bay area and the rigidity-inducing di--butylsilanediol bridge on the other side. This yielded a new bay-functionalized PBI derivative carrying the combination of a highly rigid and, simultaneously, an axially chiral perylene core.

Determining lead (Pb) concentrations in new paints using spectroscopic methods such as Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) requires technical expertise, consumables, equipment for method preparation, and instrumentation that can be cost prohibitive and difficult to maintain in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) analyzers are less expensive and simple to operate, their inaccuracy has limited their use to screening for the analysis of Pb in new, dried paint. To determine the limits of pXRF analyzers, new paint samples were purchased, dried, homogenized, and analyzed pXRF and ICP-OES.
