We report the design and characterization of a peptide that assembles as β-hairpins and forms hydrogels under physiological conditions. These hydrogels formed both in the absence and presence of several metal ions and displayed characteristic sheer-thinning properties. In particular, in the presence of Zn, we observed a novel hydrogel that proceeded via an intermolecular metal-coordination mechanism - intermolecular assembly that was previously reported instead to promote amyloid type aggregates.

Oxidative stress is a major threat to plant growth and survival. To understand how plants cope with oxidative stress, we carried out a genetic screen for Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) mutants with altered response to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in root growth. Herein, we report the characterization of one of the hypersensitive mutants obtained.

Calprotectin's Protein Structure Shields Ni-N(His) Bonds from Competing Agents.

J Phys Chem Lett

The Ni-N(His) coordination bond, formed between the nickel ion and histidine residues, is essential for recombinant protein purification, especially in Ni-NTA-based systems for selectively binding polyhistidine-tagged (Histag) proteins. While previous studies have explored its bond strength in a synthetic Ni-NTA-Histag system, the influence of the surrounding protein structure remains less understood. In this study, we used atomic force microscopy-based single-molecule force spectroscopy (AFM-SMFS) to quantify the Ni-N(His) bond strength in calprotectin, a biologically relevant protein system.

Characterization of a novel D-sorbitol dehydrogenase from Faunimonas pinastri A52C2.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Industrial Biotechnology, Ministry of Education, Jiangnan University, 1800 Lihu Avenue, Wuxi, 214122, China.

The enzyme D-sorbitol dehydrogenase (SLDH) facilitates the conversion of D-sorbitol to L-sorbose. While current knowledge of this enzyme class predominantly centers on Gluconobacter oxydans, the catalytic properties of enzymes from alternative sources, particularly their substrate specificity and coenzyme dependency, remain ambiguous. In this investigation, we conducted BLASTp analysis and screened out a novel SLDH (Fpsldh) from Faunimonas pinastri A52C2.

Melatonin increases Pb tolerance in P. ovata seedlings via the regulation of growth and stress-related phytohormones, ROS scavenging and genes responsible for melatonin synthesis, metal chelation, and stress defense. Lead (Pb) is a highly toxic heavy metal that accumulates in plants through soil and air contamination and impairs its plant growth and development.

In a systematic study, six pseudopolymorphic coordination polymers containing the ditopic 1,3-di(pyridin-4-yl)urea ligand (4bpu) constructed with d metal cations, possessing the formula {[M(4bpu)I]S} [(M = Zn, Cd and Hg), (S = MeOH or EtOH)], namely Zn-MeOH, Zn-EtOH, Cd-MeOH, Cd-EtOH, Hg- and Hg-EtOH were obtained. The title compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SC-XRD), elemental analysis (CHN), FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). The diffraction studies show that these compounds are isostructural 1D zig-zag chain coordination polymers which is also confirmed using XPac 2.
