Immunoassay procedures have a wide application in clinical medicine and as such are used throughout clinical biochemistry laboratories both for urgent and routine testing. Clinicians and laboratory personnel are often presented with immunoassay results which are inconsistent with clinical findings. Without a high index of suspicion interferences will often not be suspected. Artifactual results can be due to a range of interferences in immunoassays which can include cross reacting substances, heterophile antibodies, autoantibodies and the high dose hook effect. Further, pre-analytical aspects and certain disease states can influence the potential for interference in immunoassays. Practical solutions for investigation of artifactual results in the setting of the routine clinical laboratory are provided.

Background: Odorant binding proteins (OBPs) initiate the process of odorant perception. Numerous investigations have demonstrated that OBPs bind a broad variety of chemicals and are more likely to carry pheromones or odor molecules with high binding affinities. However, few studies have investigated its effects on insect behavior.

Zinc is an essential metal to living organisms, including corals and their symbiotic microalgae (Symbiodiniaceae). Both Zn(II) deprivation and overload are capable of leading to dysfunctional metabolism, coral bleaching, and even organism death. The present work investigated the effects of chemically defined Zn species (free Zn, ZnO nanoparticles, and the complexes Zn-histidinate and Zn-EDTA) over the growth of the dinoflagellates Symbiodinium microadriaticum, Breviolum minutum, and Effrenium voratum, and on the trypsin-like proteolytic activity of the hydrocoral Millepora alcicornis.

Diabetes and cardiovascular disease are interlinked chronic conditions that necessitate continuous and precise monitoring of physiological and environmental parameters to prevent complications. Non-invasive monitoring technologies have garnered significant interest due to their potential to alleviate the current burden of diabetes and cardiovascular disease management. However, these technologies face limitations in accuracy and reliability due to interferences from physiological and environmental factors.

Zearalenone (ZEA), produced by Fusarium, is a fungal toxin commonly found in maize, wheat, and other cereals. ZEA has the ability to bind to estrogen receptors of humans and animals and is an environmental endocrine disruptor that may interfere with glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism. In this study, we first investigated the effects of chronic exposure to low doses of ZEA with a high-fat-diet (HFD) in obese C57BL/6 J mice.

Investigating the correlation between metal coordination and molecular conductivity in single-molecule systems is essential for advancing our knowledge of molecular electronics, particularly in the realm of spintronics. In the present study, we developed two complex wires utilizing the bipyridine ligand and two transition metal ions, Co and Zn, aiming to study the impact of different spin characters on single-molecule charge transport properties. Single-molecule conductance was investigated using scanning tunnelling microscope breaking junctions (STM-BJ) technique and the underlying mechanism was analysed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
