An alternative approach to the decision threshold.

Published: April 2018

Two effects were identified that induce the dependence of the decision threshold on the uncertainty of the conversion factor. With the first effect, the conversion factor influences the decision threshold directly, through its variability. With the second effect, the variability of the conversion factor influences the decision threshold only when it is not evaluated for the null measurement. Then, the variability of the conversion factor influences the value of the measurand, where the decision threshold is evaluated. Both effects are explained and evaluated.

Accurate urine sodium measurements at home using Point of Care Testing in patients with Short Bowel Syndrome.

Clin Nutr ESPEN

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Intestinal Failure Unit, Radboud University Medical Centre Nijmegen, Geert Grooteplein 10, 6500 HB, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Measurement of the urine sodium concentration (USC) is a simple procedure that in many patients adequately indicates their hydration status. This is of particular importance in patients suffering from short bowel syndrome (SBS), who may very rapidly dehydrate and are at risk for permanently compromising their kidney function. A point of care test (POCT) that allows reliable measurement of USC would enable these patients to effectively evaluate their sodium- and water balance in the at home setting, thereby avoiding hospital visits and delayed test results.

OpenCap, a smartphone-based markerless system, offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional marker-based systems for gait analysis. However, its kinematic measurement accuracy must be evaluated before widespread use in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate OpenCap for lower-limb joint angle measurements during walking in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and to compare error metrics between patients and healthy controls.

Vision transformer-based multimodal fusion network for classification of tumor malignancy on breast ultrasound: A retrospective multicenter study.

January 2025

School of Computer Science and Engineering, Hubei Key Laboratory of Intelligent Robot, Wuhan Institute of Technology, Wuhan, PR China. Electronic address:

Background: In the context of routine breast cancer diagnosis, the precise discrimination between benign and malignant breast masses holds utmost significance. Notably, few prior investigations have concurrently explored the integration of imaging histology features, deep learning characteristics, and clinical parameters. The primary objective of this retrospective study was to pioneer a multimodal feature fusion model tailored for the prediction of breast tumor malignancy, harnessing the potential of ultrasound images.

Detection and quantification of disease-related biomarkers in wastewater samples, denominated Wastewater-based Surveillance (WBS), has proven a valuable strategy for studying the prevalence of infectious diseases within populations in a time- and resource-efficient manner, as wastewater samples are representative of all cases within the catchment area, whether they are clinically reported or not. However, analysis and interpretation of WBS datasets for decision-making during public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, remains an area of opportunity. In this article, a database obtained from wastewater sampling at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and university campuses in Monterrey and Mexico City between 2021 and 2022 was used to train simple clustering- and regression-based risk assessment models to allow for informed prevention and control measures in high-affluence facilities, even if working with low-dimensionality datasets and a limited number of observations.
