The interaction of a polyazacyclophane ligand having an ethylamine pendant arm functionalized with an anthryl group (L), with the single-stranded polynucleotides polyA, polyG, polyU, and polyC as well as with the double-stranded polynucleotides polyA-polyU, poly(dAT) , and poly(dGC) has been followed by UV/Vis titration, steady state fluorescence spectroscopy, and thermal denaturation measurements. In the case of the single-stranded polynucleotides, the UV/Vis and fluorescence titrations permit to distinguish between sequences containing purine and pyrimidine bases. For the double-stranded polynucleotides the UV/Vis measurements show for all of them hypochromicity and bathochromic shifts. However, the fluorescence studies reveal that both polyA-polyU and poly(dAT) induce a twofold increase in the fluorescence, whereas interaction of poly(dGC) with the ligand L induces a quenching of the fluorescence. Cu modulates the interaction with the double-stranded polynucleotides due to the conformation changes that its coordination induces in compound L. In general, the spectroscopic studies show that intercalation seems to be blocked by the formation of the metal complex. All these features suggest the possibility of using compound L as a sequence-selective fluorescence probe.

Dealing with infections is a daily challenge for wild animals. Empirical data show an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during immune response. This could have consequences on telomere length, the end parts of linear chromosomes, commonly used as proxy for good health and ageing.

Recent advances in the clinical development of oligonucleotide therapeutics, such as antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) and small interfering RNAs, have attracted attention as promising therapeutic modalities for genetic and intractable diseases. These oligonucleotide therapeutics exert their efficacy by binding to target RNAs present within cells; however, the mechanisms underlying their cellular uptake, especially their passage through membranes, remain largely unclear. In the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, the multi-pass transmembrane protein, SID-1, is involved in the cellular uptake of double-stranded RNAs.

Although glycosidic bonds in purines typically involve the N9 position, the chemical synthesis of adenosine produces N7-ribofuranosyladenine (7A) as a kinetically favorable ribosylation product. Similarly, in the synthesis of LNA-adenosine (AL), a minor product, N7-LNA-adenosine (7AL), is observed. While extensive research has focused on investigating the properties of N9-regioisomers of adenosine, 7A has been largely overlooked and considered as a side-product.

A triple signal amplified electrochemical aptasensor for the detection of bisphenol A (BPA) was developed for the first time based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), hemin/G-quadruplex DNAzyme, and exonuclease I (Exo I) assisted amplification strategies. The BPA aptamer (Apt) hybridized with the capture probe (CP) was fixed on the gold electrode (GE) to form the double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) structure. When BPA was present, the Apt was detached from the GE surface by specific recognition between the BPA and Apt, forming BPA-Apt complexes in solution.
