[Apud cells and apudomas of the prostate, breast and uterus]. | LitMetric

Morphofunctional features of apud cells in the prostatic, mammalian and uterine parenchyma have been studied inadequately and their further comprehensive study is needed. It will help to estimate fully enough those pathologic changes in which apud cells are involved. Dyshormonal hyperplastic processes and, especially, tumours, are of greatest importance among them. It is essential to consider not only morphologic, but functional peculiarities of tumour tissue, that will enable one to study the biological activity, long-term results of reproductive organ apudoma treatment, as well as to solve the problem of their histogenesis sources.

Article Synopsis
  • A new microscopic diagnostic sign for asphyxial drowning has been discovered in white male rats, indicating changes in the laryngeal mucosa.
  • The research showed significant hyperplasia (increase in the number of cells) of serotonin-containing APUD-cells in the larynx when rats experienced acute anoxia, compared to healthy controls.
  • These changes may trigger laryngospasm, which helps prevent water from entering the airways during drowning, suggesting this hyperplasia can be a useful diagnostic criterion in research on drowning.

Equine Stomach Development in the Foetal Period of Prenatal Life-An Immunohistochemical Study.

Animals (Basel)

December 2022

Department of Animal Physiology and Biostructure, Division of Animal Anatomy, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, Kożuchowska 1, 51-631 Wrocław, Poland.

The study consisted of the immunohistochemical analysis of fundic and pyloric mucosa in the equine stomach between the 4th and 11th month of gestation. The accessible material was classified into three age groups using the CRL method. The adult reference group was used to define potential differences between foetal and adult populations of gastric APUD cells.

Molecular factors, diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal tract neuroendocrine tumors: An update.

World J Clin Cases

September 2022

Department of 2 Surgical Propedeutic, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Medicine, Thessaloniki 54642, Greece.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors (GI-NETs) is increasing, and despite recent advances in their therapy, it remains inadequate in patients with advanced well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors. These tumors present many challenges concerning the molecular basis and genomic profile, pathophysiology, clinicopathological features, histopathologic classification, diagnosis and treatment. There has been an ongoing debate on diagnostic criteria and clinical behavior, and various changes have been made over the last few years.

The histamine content in bioamine-containing cells and the content of NSE cells of the lymph nodes were studied in rats in 40 min and in 2 and 4 h after bone marrow allotransplantation by using the cross luminescence-histochemical method and immunohistochemical method, respectively. Within 2 h after allotransplantation of the bone marrow, a significant increase in histamine content in bioamine-containing cells and an increase in the number of NSE cells in the period were observed. Both APUD and NSE+ cells were found to be heterogeneous by staining and luminescence.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurons derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) are being studied to understand neuropsychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia (SCZ), focusing on how these cellular models relate to the patients' clinical features.
  • Researchers analyzed neurons from 13 individuals with high genetic risk for SCZ and 15 neurotypical individuals, finding significant differences in their electrophysiological properties.
  • This research suggests that specific neuronal functions can be linked to clinical symptoms, providing insights that could inform the development of new treatments for SCZ.
