Statistics of twinning in strained ferroelastics.

Published: October 2017

In this review, we show that the evolution of the microstructure and kinetics of ferroelastic crystals under external shear can be explored by computer simulations of 2D model materials. We find that the nucleation and propagation of twin boundaries in ferroelastics depend sensitively on temperature. In the plastic regime, the evolution of the ferroelastic microstructure under strain deformation maintains a stick-and-slip mechanism in all temperature regimes, whereas the dynamic behavior changes dramatically from power-law statistics at low temperature to a Kohlrausch law at intermediate temperature, and then to a Vogel-Fulcher law at high temperature. In the yield regime, the distribution of jerk energies follows power-law statistics in all temperature regimes for a large range of strain rates. The non-spanning avalanches in the yield regime follow a parabolic temporal profile. The changes of twin pattern and twin boundaries density represent an important step towards domain boundary engineering.

The present study was focused on assessing the molten salt-induced hot corrosion resistance of selective laser melting (SLM) manufactured Inconel 625 at 900 °C for 96 h and investigating the possibility of improving the superalloy's corrosion resistance by applying a pre-oxidation heat treatment. The material's hot corrosion properties were assessed in a heat-treated state (heat treatments performed at 1000 °C/1 h and 1150 °C/1 h, respectively) with and without pre-oxidation. The heat treatment at 1000 °C promoted the columnar dendrite morphology evolution, while the heat treatment at 1150 °C promoted the equiaxed dendrite morphology evolution.

Melting of AuPd Nanoparticles Revisited: Geometry and Size Effects.

Materials (Basel)

Centro de Investigación en Ciencias Físico-Matemáticas (CICFIM), Facultad de Ciencias Físico-Matemáticas, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, San Nicolás de los Garza 66455, Mexico.

The thermal stability of bimetallic nanoparticles plays a crucial role in their performance in applications in catalysis, biotechnology, and materials science. In this study, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the melting behavior of Au-Pd nanoparticles with cuboctahedral, icosahedral, and decahedral geometries. Using a tight-binding potential, we systematically explore the effects of particle size and composition on the melting transition.

A novel nickel-based powder metallurgy superalloy was processed using two different thermal-mechanical processes, including hot isostatic pressed (As-HIP) and hipped + hot extruded + isothermally-forged (IF) heat treatments following two processed alloys, designated as As-HIP-HT and IF-HT. The objective of this study is to investigate the microstructure and mechanical property evolution in a nickel-based powder disk alloy fabricated by two processes. The findings revealed that both As-HIP and IF alloys underwent substantial recrystallization, with grains in the IF alloy being finer.

This study employs molecular dynamics simulations to unravel the interplay between twin spacing, temperature, and mechanical response in nanotwinned AgPd alloys. For fine-grained systems, a dual strengthening-softening transition emerges as twin spacing decreases, driven by a shift in dislocation behavior from inclined-to-twin-boundary slip to parallel-to-twin-boundary glide. In contrast, coarse-grained configurations exhibit monotonic strengthening with reduced twin spacing, governed by strain localization at grain boundaries and suppressed dislocation activity.

Objective 3D virtual models have gained interest in urology, particularly in the context of robotic partial nephrectomy. From these, newly developed "anatomical digital twin models" reproduce both the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the organs, including the texture of the tissues they comprise. The aim of the study was to develop and test the new digital twins in the setting of intraoperative guidance during robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN).
