Metallic silver nanoparticles were synthesized in aqueous solution using chitosan, as both reducing and stabilizing agent, and AgNO as silver precursor aiming the production of solid ultra-thin films. A systematic characterization of the resulting system as a function of the initial concentrations was performed. The combination of UV-vis absorption - and its quantitative analysis - with X-ray photoelectron spectra, light scattering measurements and atomic force microscopy allowed obtaining a rational picture of silver reduction mechanism through the identification of the nature of the formed reduced/oxidized species. Nanoparticle mean sizes and sizes distributions were rather independent from the precursors initial absolute and relative concentrations ([AgNO]/[chitosan]). This work clarifies some points of the mechanism involved showing experimental evidence of the early stages of the very fast silver reduction in chitosan aqueous solutions through the spectral signature of the smallest silver aggregate (Ag) even at room temperature. The characterized system is believed to be useful for research fields where silver nanoparticles completely exempt of harmful traces of inorganic ions, coming from additional reducing agents, are needed, especially to be used in biocompatible in films.

In this study, chitosan (C)-polyvinyl alcohol (P) edible film containing bio-fabricated nanosilver particles (nAg) (as antimicrobial agent) and beetroot peel extract (BRPE) (as antioxidant agent and pH indicator) was used as spoilage indicator in cold-stored rainbow trout fillets. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity (43.02%), reducing power (2.

Food packaging plays a vital role in guaranteeing the quality and safety of fresh products during the storage and distribution. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) is identified as a promising polymer for food packaging film owing to its film-forming ability, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. Nevertheless, the practical applications of pure CMCS film usually suffer from some limits owing to its poor antibacterial effect and mechanical strength.

Burn injuries often cause prolonged oxidative stress and inflammatory pain due to an initial increase in inflammatory responses, consequently exacerbating depressive disorders and severely impairing patients' quality of life. The primary function of traditional burn dressings is to prevent infection and facilitate tissue repair. However, these dressings are not intended for the inflammatory pain and depression that often occur during recovery.

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock is a crucial step towards mitigating the impact of climate change and improving environmental sustainability in agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Yucca schidigera extract, chitosan, and chitosan nanoparticles as feed additives on in vitro GHG emissions and fermentation profiles in ruminal fluid from bulls. Total gas, CH, CO, and HS emissions (up to 48 h), rumen fermentation profiles, and CH conversion efficiency were measured using standard protocols.
