A high-salt, hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) method was developed to measure the relative hydrophobicity of a diverse set of solutes. Through the careful control of buffer pH and salt concentration, this assay was then used to ascertain for the first time the relative hydrophobicity values of three different bacteriophage, four mammalian viruses, and a range of biotech medicinal proteins as benchmarked to protein standards previously characterized for hydrophobicity.

Natural single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) such as proteins have inspired research into the formation and application of synthetic SCNPs. Although the latter can mimic general aspects of the self-assembly behavior of their biological counterparts, these systems remain relatively understudied. In this respect, a systematic series of amphiphilic statistical copolymers (ASC) of different molecular weights, with a hydrophilic comonomer (methacrylic acid) and varying hydrophobic comonomer to encompass methacrylates of different hydrophobicity, are synthesized.

Regulation mechanism of the long-chain -alkane monooxygenase gene in RAG-1.

Appl Environ Microbiol

Key Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology and Technology, Ministry of Education, College of Life Sciences, Nankai University, Tianjin, Tianjin, China.

Unlabelled: As toxic pollutants, -alkanes are pervasively distributed in most environmental matrices. Although the alkane monooxygenase AlmA plays a critical role in the metabolic pathway of solid long-chain -alkanes (≥C) that are extremely difficult to degrade, the mechanism regulating this process remains unclear. Here, we characterized the function of AlmA in RAG-1, which was mainly involved in the degradation of long-chain -alkanes (C-C), among which, -C induced the promoter activity most.

[Sorption and Transport of Antibiotics in Manured Upland Agricultural Soils].

Huan Jing Ke Xue

State Key Laboratory of Subtropical Silviculture, College of Forestry and Biotechnology, Zhejiang A&F University, Hangzhou 311300, China.

Sorption and transport are important environmental behaviors of antibiotics in soils and can determine the fate of antibiotics in environments; however, limited relevant studies have been conducted on long-term manured soils. In this study, batch and repacked soil column experiments were conducted to examine the sorption and transport behavior of four veterinary antibiotics, including sulfamethazine (SMT), florfenicol (FFC), doxycycline (DOX), and enrofloxacin (ENR), in red soils, yellow soils, and calcareous soils with long-term amendment of chicken or pig manure collected in Zhejiang Province. The results showed that the sorption isothermal data of the four target antibiotics all conformed well to the linear and Freundlich models.

A Sprague-Dawley rat model was utilized to elucidate perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) toxicokinetics with a goal of developing an in vivo approach for quantifying PFAS relative bioavailability in impacted soil. Following single dose administration (gavage) of ∼ 0.2-2000 µg kg BW of PFOA, PFOS or PFHxS, differences in PFAS blood, organ and excreta concentrations were observed over 120 h although linear dose responses were determined for area under the blood plasma time curves (AUC; PFOA, PFHxS), liver accumulation (LA: PFOS) and urinary excretion (UE; PFOA, PFHxS).

In microwave (MW) thermotherapy, it is challenging to regulate the temporal and spatial distribution of the temperature at the nanoscale. Herein, we report a nanothermometer for simultaneous MW heating and temperature distribution measurement. The nanothermometer was prepared by free radical polymerization with vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride (VBTMACl) as the MW thermosensitizer and isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as the thermoresponsive unit, followed by anion exchange with fluorophore sodium 3-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenoxy)propane-1-sulfonate (TPESONa).
