After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the vertical distribution of radiocesium in soil has been investigated to better understand the behavior of radiocesium in the environment. The typical method used for measuring the vertical distribution of radiocesium is troublesome because it requires collection and measurement of the activity of soil samples. In this study, we established a method of estimating the vertical distribution of radiocesium by focusing on the characteristics of gamma-ray spectra obtained via aerial radiation monitoring using an unmanned helicopter. The estimates are based on actual measurement data collected at an extended farm. In this method, the change in the ratio of direct gamma rays to scattered gamma rays at various depths in the soil was utilized to quantify the vertical distribution of radiocesium. The results show a positive correlation between the abovementioned and the actual vertical distributions of radiocesium measured in the soil samples. A vertical distribution map was created on the basis of this ratio using a simple equation derived from the abovementioned correlation. This technique can provide a novel approach for effective selection of high-priority areas that require decontamination.

Obtaining controllable active layer morphology plays a significant role in boosting the device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a quaternary strategy, which incorporates polymer donor D18-Cl and small molecule acceptor AITC into the host D18:N3, is employed to precisely modulate crystallization kinetics for favorable morphology evolution within the active layer. In situ spectroscopic measurements during film-formation demonstrate that while D18-Cl works as a nucleator to promote aggregation of D18 and foster donor/acceptor intermixing, AITC has exactly the opposite impact on aggregation of N3 and intermixing kinetics of donor and acceptor, working as a plasticizer.

This study carries out a series of complex unsteady three-dimensional (3D) computational analyses that were validated by experimental tests to examine the performance enhancement of a cylindrical shell-and-coil ice storage enclosure by employing various spiral longitudinal fin geometries covering the heat transfer fluid (HTF) tubes throughout the transient process of solid-liquid phase change. The phase change material (PCM) in this work was selected to be water and the tubes and fins were chosen to be made of copper alloy. Large-scale oceanic assessments are key for determining the persistence and long-range transport potential of organic pollutants, but there is a dearth of these for organophosphate esters (OPEs), widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers. This work reports the latitudinal distribution (42°N-70°S) and vertical profiles (from the surface to 2000 m depth) of OPEs in the Atlantic and Southern Oceans and explores their biogeochemical controls. The latitudinal gradient shows higher surface OPE concentrations near the equator than at higher latitudes, consistent with the prevailing oceanic and atmospheric circulation, and measured wet deposition events.
