The utilization of tissue culture in neurobiological studies is discussed for all phyla phylogenetically preceding Phylum Arthropoda. Only two phyla, Mollusca and Annelida, are represented in such studies. The members of Phylum Mollusca which have been so investigated are Aplysia, Helisoma and Lymnaea. The mollusc Aplysia has been used to investigate several processes, including neurosecretion, synaptic transmission and synaptogenesis. Helisoma was employed to study factors regulating neurite growth and the specificity of synapse formation; mechanisms of neurite growth were investigated in the snail Lymnaea. The only member of Phylum Annelida involved in appropriate studies has been the leech Hirudo. This organism was used to investigate axonal regeneration and synaptic mechanisms.

Guanabara Bay, located at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a highly urbanized and polluted estuary that houses different port areas, shipyards, and marinas of intense maritime traffic. This infrastructure is widely associated with the introduction and spread of non-native sessile species. A rapid assessment of non-native benthic sessile species conducted in the bay in late 2022 across 19 sites identified a total of 83 taxa, both native and non-native, classified into the following main groups: one Cyanophyta, 13 Macroalgae, 14 Porifera, 11 Cnidaria, six Bryozoa, five Annelida, 10 Mollusca, six Crustacea, 10 Echinodermata, and seven Ascidiacea.

Sediment reworking by benthic infauna, namely bioturbation, is of pivotal importance in expansive soft-sediment environments such as the Wadden Sea. Bioturbating fauna facilitate ecosystem functions such as bentho-pelagic coupling and sediment nutrient remineralization capacities. Yet, these benthic fauna are expected to be profoundly affected by current observed rising sea temperatures.
