In recent years, evidence has continued to mount showing a strong relationship between diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. This, in turn, has driven a shift to a more integrated and holistic approach in the treatment of patients with cardio-renal-metabolic (CRM) disease. The 2022 Diabetes, Cardiorenal, and Metabolic (DCRM) multispecialty practice recommendations were the first multispecialty consensus on the comprehensive management of patients with diabetes, cardiorenal, and/or metabolic diseases, providing evidence-based recommendations that are simple to implement.

Immune checkpoint inhibition unleashes the power of the immune system against tumour cells. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) block the inhibitory effects of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated protein 4, programmed death protein 1, programmed death ligand 1 and lymphocyte activation gene 3 molecules on T-cells, and so enhance physiological cytotoxic effects. ICIs can significantly improve survival from cancers, including those previously associated with poor treatment response, such as metastatic melanoma.

In heart failure, sympathetic overdrive is evidenced by norepinephrine spillover, receptor level changes, etc. Beta-blockers continue to be the cornerstone of treatment in patients with chronic heart failure due to their ability to counteract sympathetic overdrive. Extensive clinical research has demonstrated that long-term beta-blocker treatment with metoprolol succinate, carvedilol, or bisoprolol enhances left ventricular function and reverses left ventricular remodeling, decreases hospitalization risk, and increases survival.

Lung cancer represents the second most frequent neoplasm and the leading cause of neoplastic death among both women and men, causing almost 25% of all cancer deaths. Patients undergoing lung resection-both for primary and secondary tumors-require careful preoperative cardiopulmonary functional evaluation to confirm the safety of the planned resection, to assess the maximum tolerable volume of resection or to exclude surgery, thus shifting the therapeutic approach toward less invasive options. Cardiopulmonary reserve, pulmonary lung function and mechanical respiratory function represent the cornerstones of preoperative assessment of patients undergoing major lung resection.
