Article Abstract

Inconsistent reconstructions of East Asian hydroclimate for the last millennium significantly limit our understanding of the mechanisms behind climate variability during the medieval climate anomaly (MCA) and little ice age (LIA) in the region. In this study, we present new high-resolution multiproxy records (diatom, δC, C/N, TS) from the Mulyoungari swamp, Jeju Island, South Korea. Our results indicate that El Niño southern oscillation-like variations caused the dry MCA/wet LIA pattern in the study area. Recent paleo-ENSO studies generally support the hypothesis that the MCA was characterized by more persistent El Niño-like conditions. During El Niño events, the genesis of typhoons affecting coastal East Asia tends to diminish because of warm anomalies of eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) SSTs and downward motions over the western tropical Pacific. Therefore, coastal East Asia likely experienced a decline in typhoon-related precipitation during the MCA, in contrast to monsoon-dominated northern China. Our results additionally imply that SST anomalies in the ETP need to be carefully checked to better understand current hydroclimate variability in coastal East Asia, one of the most populated areas on earth.

Nitrification, the oxidation of ammonium to nitrate via nitrite, links nitrogen fixation and nitrogen loss processes, playing key roles in coastal nitrogen cycle. However, few studies have simultaneously examined both ammonia-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing microbes. This work investigated the abundance and community structure of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) using archaeal amoA gene, bacterial amoA gene, and NOB nxrB gene, respectively, through q-PCR and Sanger sequencing along the Changjiang Estuary salinity gradient.

Exposure to infected animals and their contaminated environments may be the primary cause of human infection with the H7N9 avian influenza virus. However, the transmission characteristics and specific role of various influencing factors in the spread of the epidemic are not clearly understood. Therefore, it is of great significance for scientific research and practical application to explore the influencing factors related to the epidemic.

Friends and foes: symbiotic and algicidal bacterial influence on blooms.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) of the toxigenic dinoflagellate (KB) are pivotal in structuring the ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), decimating coastal ecology, local economies, and human health. Bacterial communities associated with toxigenic phytoplankton species play an important role in influencing toxin production in the laboratory, supplying essential factors to phytoplankton and even killing blooming species. However, our knowledge of the prevalence of these mechanisms during HAB events is limited, especially for KB blooms.

A juvenile spinner shark, Carcharhinus brevipinna, was captured and released in the coastal waters of Rhode Island, USA, where range delineations based on historic records of spinner sharks and the species' congener, the blacktip shark, Carcharhinus limbatus, are plagued by misidentification. The shark in question was within the size range of neonates for C. brevipinna and bore a partially healed umbilical wound.

AS3MT, GSTO2, and GSTP1 genes play important roles in the arsenic biotransformation pathway, while CYP2E1 gene has a prominent role in the metabolic activation of xenobiotics. Hence, polymorphisms of these genes might have an effect on arsenic biotransformation and could impact susceptibility to arsenical skin lesions in individuals of chronic arsenic toxicity. The present case-control study, comprising 148 subjects, attempted to evaluate genetic association between nine polymorphisms of AS3MT, GSTO2, GSTP1 and CYP2E1 genes and arsenical skin lesions in a West Bengal (WB) population.
