Objective: We sought to establish the prevalence and predictors of adequate vitamin D supplement use, as per current falls prevention guidelines in Australian aged care homes. De-identified medication chart data from November 2014 were collected from pharmacists. The proportion of residents prescribed vitamin D and associations between adequate vitamin D supplementation and state, calcium use and osteoporosis medication use were assessed.
Results: The prevalence of adequate vitamin D supplement use (≥800 IU) was 47.1% of residents (95% CI 41.4, 52.8%). There was no significant difference between states (p = 0.3), however there was large variation between individual facilities (15.9-85.0%). Residents were more likely to be prescribed an adequate dose of vitamin D if they were prescribed a calcium supplement (p = 0.0001) or an osteoporosis medication (p = 0.03).

Correct treatment of chronic osteomyelitis depends on proper identification of the bone-infecting microorganism, but it is difficult identify the specific etiology in previously treated patients and in those with implants. Small colony variants auxotrophyc for menadione had been related with false-negative results in culture of patient with chronic osteomyelitis, but menadione supplementation can increase bone culture performance. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of menadione supplementation on isolates in bone cultures, in a cohort of patients with osteomyelitis, Medellín- Colombia.

This study was aim to investigate the effects of lipoic acid (ALA) on performance, meat quality, serum biochemistry and antioxidant function of broilers under heat stress (HS). Two hundred1-day-old Cobb broilers were randomly divided into four treatment groups and each treatment consisted of 4 replicates of 10 broilers each. The treatment group adopts a 2 × 2 two-factor setting, which is divided into two diets (basic diet or 250 mg/kg ALA diet) and two temperatures (24 ± 1℃ or 33 ± 1℃).

Summary: Oral levothyroxine (LT4) is prescribed worldwide for hypothyroidism. Bariatric surgery for patients with obesity has shown a substantial, long-term weight loss and considerable improvement of obesity-related diseases. LT4 malabsorption represents a significant cause of refractory hypothyroidism, well known after malabsorptive bariatric surgery such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

We present a rare case of a 2-month-old infant who developed severe hypercalcemia and hypertriglyceridemia due to an accidental overdose of 25-OH vitamin D, leading to hypertriglyceridemia and pancreatitis.
