The adsorption mechanisms of lead (Pb) on four biochars (SB produced from British hardwood at 600°C and three standard biochars produced from wheat straw pellets at 700°C (WSP700), rice husk at 700°C (RH700) and soft wood pellets at 550°C (SWP550)) were characterised qualitatively and quantitatively, using a combination of chemical and micro-structural methods. Sequential extraction test results show that Pb was predominantly adsorbed on SB (85.31%), WSP700 (75.61%) and RH700 (85.76%) as acidic soluble fraction, which was potentially bioavailable if applied in soil. The exchangeable fraction for SB, WSP700 and RH700 was low (1.38-4.29%) and their water soluble fraction was negligible (0-0.14%). Micro-structural analysis further investigated this fraction and confirmed the presence of cerussite (PbCO) on SB and hydrocerussite (Pb(CO)(OH)) on WSP700, RH 700 and SWP550, suggesting a mechanism of surface precipitation for Pb adsorption on the biochars. The percentages of Pb in the form of PbCO on SB (82.24%) and Pb(CO)(OH) on WSP700 (13.00%), RH 700 (19.19%) and SWP550 (29.70%) were quantified using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). This study suggests that it is feasible to quantify different adsorption mechanisms of Pb on biochars, which is important for the practical application of biochar in water and/or soil treatment.

Ofloxacin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic, raises serious environmental concerns due to its persistence in aquatic systems. This study offers new insights into the environmental behavior of ofloxacin and its interactions with carbon-based adsorbents with the aim of enhancing our understanding of its removal mechanisms via adsorption processes. Using a comprehensive computational approach, we analyzed the speciation, pK values, and solubility of ofloxacin across various pH conditions, accounting for all four microspecies, including the often-overlooked neutral form.

Understanding the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism and accurately characterizing the reaction interface are essential for improving fuel cell efficiency. We developed an active learning framework combining machine learning force fields and enhanced sampling to explore the dynamics and kinetics of the ORR on Fe-N/C using a fully explicit solvent model. Different possible reaction paths have been explored and the O adsorption process is confirmed as the rate-determining step of the ORR at the Fe-N/C-water interface, which needs to overcome a free energy barrier of 0.

Introduction: Heavy metal soil pollution is a global issue that can be efficiently tackled through the process of phytoremediation. The use of rapeseed in the phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated agricultural land shows great potential. Nevertheless, its ability to tolerate heavy metal stress at the molecular level remains unclear.

Molecular scale information is needed to understand ions coordination to mineral surfaces and consequently to accelerate the design of improved adsorbents. The present work reports on the use of two-dimensional correlation Fourier Transform infra-red spectroscopy (2D-COS-FTIR) and hetero 2D-COS-FTIR- X-ray diffraction (XRD) to probe the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by activated carbon (AC) and its composite with PWO (AC-composite). The adsorption data at an initial Cr(VI) concentration of 320 mg L (320 ppm) revealed maximum adsorption capacities of 65 mg g for AC and 73 mg g for AC-composite, corresponding to removal percentages of 83 % and 94 %, respectively.

This study focuses on developing biochar-based adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rates for removing boron from aqueous solutions. Hydroxy-enriched biochar composites (BC (carboxylated biochar), BC-PDA (polydopamine loaded biochar), MBC-PDA (polydopamine loaded magnetic biochar), BC-AlOOH (AlOOH loaded biochar), and BC-ZnCl (biochar modified by ZnCl)) were synthesized specifically for boron adsorption to utilize the superior adsorption capacity of biochar. All adsorbents were synthesized using straightforward experimental techniques from date palm cellulosic fibers as promising lignocellulose feedstock and subjected to various characterization methods.
