Four metal-organic frameworks with similar topology but different chemical environment inside the pore structure, namely, IFP-1, IFP-3, IFP-5, and IFP-7, have been investigated with respect to the separation potential for olefin-paraffin mixtures as well as the influence of the different linkers on adsorption properties using experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. All IFP structures show a higher adsorption of ethane compared to ethene with the exception of IFP-7 which shows no selectivity in breakthrough experiments. For propane/propane separation, all adsorbents show a higher adsorption for the olefin. The experimental results agree quite well with the simulated values except for the IFP-7, which is presumably due to the flexibility of the structure. Moreover, the experimental and simulated isotherms were confirmed with breakthrough experiments that render IFP-1, IFP-3, and IFP-5 as suitable for the purification of ethene from ethane.

Direct determination of the equilibrium adsorption and spectroscopic observation of adsorbent-adsorbate interaction is crucial to evaluate the olefin/paraffin separation performance of porous adsorbents. However, the experimental characterization of competitive adsorption of various adsorbates at atomic-molecular level in the purification of multicomponent gas mixtures is challenging and rarely conducted. Herein, solid-state NMR spectroscopy is employed to examine the effect of co-adsorbed guest adsorbates on the separation of ethylene/ethane mixtures on Mg-MOF-74, Zn-MOF-74 and UTSA-74.

Cryogenic distillation, a currently employed method for CH/CH and CH/CH mixture separation, is energy-intensive, prompting the research toward alternative technologies, including adsorbent-based separation. In this work, we combine machine learning (ML) technique with high-throughput screening to screen ∼23,000 hypothetical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for paraffin (CH and CH) selective adsorbent separation. First, structure-based prescreening was employed to remove MOFs with undesired geometric properties.

Olefin/paraffin separations are among the most energy-intensive processes in the petrochemical industry, with ethylene being the most widely consumed chemical feedstock. Adsorptive separation utilizing molecular sieving adsorbents can optimize energy efficiency, whereas the size-exclusive mechanism alone cannot achieve multiple olefin/paraffin sieving in a single adsorbent. Herein, an unprecedented sieving adsorbent, BFFOUR-Cu-dpds (BFFOUR = BF, dpds = 4,4'-bipyridinedisulfide), is reported for simultaneous sieving of C-C olefins from their corresponding paraffins.

Olefins can be cracked to provide more low-carbon olefins than paraffins; therefore, separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures is essential for arranging hydrocarbon molecules for directed conversion. In this article, a simple approach for reducing copper atoms in Cu-BTC has been developed to improve olefin/paraffin adsorption capacity and selectivity. Considering that Cu-BTC shows adsorption benefits, its olefin/paraffin adsorption and separation performance were improved further by in situ reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) in Cu-BTC using ethanol as the reducing agent and nickel ions as the catalyst.

The development of energy-saving technology for the efficient separation of olefin and paraffin is highly important for the chemical industry. Herein, we report a self-assembled Fe L capsule containing a hydrophobic cavity, which can be used to encapsulate and separate propylene/propane. The successful encapsulation of propylene and propane by the Fe L cage in a water solution was documented by NMR spectroscopy.
