Nature has inspired the fabrication of intelligent devices to meet the needs of the advanced community and better understand the imitation of biology. As a biomimetic nanodevice, nanochannels/nanopores aroused increasing interest because of their potential applications in nanofluidic fields. In this review, we have summarized some recent results mainly focused on the design and fabrication of one-dimensional nanochannels, which can be made of many materials, including polymers, inorganics, biotic materials, and composite materials. These nanochannels have some properties similar to biological channels, such as selectivity, voltage-dependent current fluctuations, ionic rectification current and ionic gating, Therefore, they show great potential for the fields of biosensing, filtration, and energy conversions. These advances can not only help people to understand the living processes in nature, but also inspire scientists to develop novel nanodevices with better performance for mankind.

Harnessing ionic gradients to generate electricity has inspired the development of nanofluidic membranes with charged nanochannels for osmotic energy conversion. However, achieving high-performance osmotic energy output remains elusive due to the trade-off between ion selectivity and nanochannel membrane permeability. In this study, we report a homogeneous nanofluidic membrane, composed of sulfonated nanoporous carbon (SPC) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (T-CNF), engineered to overcome these limitations.

Nanofluidics is an interdisciplinary field of study that bridges hydrodynamics, statistical physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, and other fields to investigate the transport of fluids and ions on the nanometric scale. The progress in this field, however, has been constrained by challenges in fabricating nanofluidic devices suitable for systematic investigations. Recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) materials have revolutionized the development of nanofluids.

Owing to the facile fabrication and surface modification, the cost-effective polymer nanopores are widely employed in unimolecular determination of biomacromolecules and selective sensing of small molecules, nanoparticles and biomarkers. However, the documented polymer nanochannels are generally microscale in length with low spatial resolution. We herein synthesized azobenzene side-chain polymer (Azo-PMA) and spin-coated on silicon nitride membrane to obtain a polymer film of nanoscale thickness for further nanopore generation via controlled dielectric breakdown (CDB) approach.

Artificial ionic nanochannels with light perception capabilities hold promise for creating ionic devices. Nevertheless, most research primarily focuses on regulating single nanochannels, leaving the cumulative effect of numerous nanochannels and their integration underexplored. We herein develop a biomimetic photoreceptor based on photoresponsive highly aligned nanochannels (pHANCs), which exhibit uniform channel heights, phototunable surface properties, and excellent compatibility with microfabrication techniques, enabling the scalable fabrication and integration into functional ionic devices.

Microfluidic-based sheath flow focusing methods have been widely used for efficiently isolating, concentrating, and detecting pathogenic bacteria for various biomedical applications due to their enhanced sensitivity and exceptional integration. However, such a microfluidic device usually needs complicated device fabrication and sample dilution, hampering the efficient and sensitive identification of target bacteria. In this study, we develop and fabricate a sheath-assisted and pneumatic-induced nano-sieve device for achieving the improved on-chip concentration and sensitive detection of (MRSA).
