A microring modulator array coupled to a common bus waveguide can be used to construct low power, compact and flexible wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmitters. However, due to extremely small working bandwidths of the rings, it is challenging to find the right resonant wavelength setting and locking the resonance to an external laser. In the paper, we propose a novel technique enabling simultaneous wavelength locking of a microring modulator array with a single monitor, together with automatically optimizing the wavelength setting. We experimentally demonstrate locking three rings over a temperature range >40 °C at 3x20 Gb/s on-off-keying (OOK) modulation and ~3x75 Gb/s discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation.

With the rapid advancement of information technology, the data demands in transmission rates, processing speed, and storage capacity have been increasing significantly. However, silicon electro-optic modulators, characterized by their weak electro-optic effect, struggle to balance modulation efficiency and bandwidth. To overcome this limitation, we propose an electro-optic modulator based on an all-fiber micro-ring resonator and a p-Si/n-ITO heterojunction, achieving high modulation efficiency and large bandwidth.

Whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators, renowned for their high Q-factors and narrow line widths, are widely utilized in integrated photonics. Integrating diffraction gratings onto WGM cavities has gained significant attention because these gratings function as azimuthal refractive index modulators, enabling single-mode WGM emissions and supporting beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM). The introduction of curved grating structures facilitates guided mode resonances by coupling high-order diffracted waves with leaking modes from the waveguide.

Erbium-doped thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) lasers have attracted great interest in recent years due to their compatibility with high-speed electro-optic (EO) modulation on the same platform. In this work, high-efficiency single-mode erbium-doped microring lasers with milliwatt output powers were demonstrated. Monolithic lithium niobate microring resonators using pulley-waveguide-coupling were fabricated by the photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE) technique.

Silicon photonic waveguide resonators, such as microring resonators, photonic crystal waveguide cavities, and Fabry-Perot resonators based on the distributed Bragg reflectors, are key device components for silicon-based photonic integrated circuits (Si-PIC). For the Si-PIC with high integration density, the device footprints of the conventional photonic waveguide resonators need to be more compact. Inverse design, which is operated by the design expectation and different from the conventional design methods, has been investigated for reducing the photonic device components nowadays.

Universal all-optical (optical input - optical output) logic gates, realized in a commercial foundry silicon photonics process, are reported. Microring resonator modulator and zero-biased stacked photodiodes are used to create the required optical input-output nonlinear transfer function for optical gate realizations. Several logic gate functions, specifically NOR which is a universal logic gate that can be used to implement any logic, are demonstrated.
