We have developed a novel technique to quantify submicron scale mass density fluctuations in weakly disordered heterogeneous optical media using confocal fluorescence microscopy. Our method is based on the numerical evaluation of the light localization properties of an 'optical lattice' constructed from the pixel intensity distributions of images obtained with confocal fluorescence microscopy. Here we demonstrate that the technique reveals differences in the mass density fluctuations of the fluorescently labeled molecules between normal and cancer cells, and that it has the potential to quantify the degree of malignancy of cancer cells. Potential applications of the technique to other disease situations or characterizing disordered samples are also discussed.
This article studies the synthesis, as well as the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of Eu-doped ZnO quantum dots (QDs) and investigates the energy transfer mechanism from the ZnO host to Eu ions using Reisfeld's approximation. Eu-doped ZnO QDs at varying concentrations (0-7%) were successfully prepared using a wet chemical method. The successful doping of Eu ions into the ZnO host lattice, as well as the composition and valence states of the elements present in the sample, were confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses.
Polymer-based organic electrodes for rechargeable batteries are attractive due to their design flexibility, sustainability, and environmental compatibility. Unfortunately, waste management of conventional polymer materials typically involves incineration, which emits greenhouse gases. Consequently, degradable polymers should be ideal candidates for future green batteries.
Background: Recently, the importance of social networks and other contextual factors in shaping health literacy of adolescents has gained recognition. However, research often simply refers to context without explicitly describing it. In this qualitative study, we aimed to explore how adolescents activate their (social) resources to develop and practice health literacy within a Swiss cantonal school health service program and in their everyday lives.
Despite the importance of the effect of subnanoscale roughness on contact line behavior, it is difficult to directly observe the local behavior of contact lines at the micro- and nanoscale, leaving significant gaps in our current understanding. In this research, we investigate contact line motions and their relationship with nanoscale surface topography using coherence scanning interferometry. Our experiments were conducted on the substrates with different wettability without changing nanoscale surface topography.
