Three types of Al-5Ti master alloys were synthesized by a method of thermal explosion reaction in pure molten aluminum. Performance comparison of Al-5Ti master alloy in grain refinement of commercial purity Al with different additions (0.6%, 1.0%, 1.6%, 2.0%, and 3.0%) and holding time (10, 30, 60 and 120 min) were investigated. The results show that Al-5Ti master alloy with blocky TiAl₃ particles clearly has better refining efficiency than the master alloy with mixed TiAl₃ particles and the master alloy with needle-like TiAl₃ particles. The structures of master alloys, differing by sizes, morphologies and quantities of TiAl₃ crystals, were found to affect the pattern of the grain refining properties with the holding time. The grain refinement effect was revealed to reduce markedly for master alloys with needle-like TiAl₃ crystals and to show the further significant improvement at a longer holding time for the master alloy containing both larger needle-like and blocky TiAl₃ particles. For the master alloy with finer blocky particles, the grain refining effect did not obviously decrease during the whole studied range of the holding time.

Nickel significantly increases the toughness of steel and makes it ideal for use in applications that require high impact and fracture resistance at low temperatures. These inherent advantages position nickel steel as indispensable material in various domains, with a pronounced presence in stationary Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanks and in the shipbuilding industry, particularly for tanks in vessels intended for the transport of liquefied ethane and LNG. The presented study focuses on assessing the fracture toughness behaviour of nickel alloy steel 1.

Background: The passive fit of 3-unit implant supported prefabricated metal screw-retained prosthesis before implant placement might be difficult. Hence, we aim to evaluate the passive fit and time efficiency of CAD/CAM 3-unit implant supported fixed prostheses that were constructed based on virtual versus those based on actual implant positions in Kennedy Class I models.
Methods: A sample of 5 Kennedy class I models with thin wiry ridges were restored by 20 frameworks bilaterally, 10 based on actual (group A) and 10 based on virtual (group V) implant positions.

To benchmark the accuracy of the models and improve the predictive capability of future experiments, the National Ignition Facility requires measurements of the physical conditions inside inertial confinement fusion hohlraums. The ion temperature and bulk motion velocity of the gas-filled regions of the hohlraum can be obtained by replacing the helium tamping gas in the hohlraum with deuterium-tritium (DT) gas and measuring the Doppler broadening and Doppler shift of the neutron spectrum produced by nuclear reactions in the hohlraum. To understand the spatial distribution of the neutron production inside the hohlraum, we have developed a new penumbral neutron imager with a 12 mm diameter field of view using a simple tungsten alloy spindle.

The inefficiency of grain refinement processes has traditionally been attributed to the limited utilization of heterogeneous nucleation particles within master alloy systems, resulting in the formation of abundant inactive particles. This study aims to investigate the alternative influences of particles by incorporating external micrometer-sized TiB particles into the grain refinement process. Through a series of experiments, the refinement efficiency, grain refinement mechanism, and resultant microstructure of TiB particle-induced grain refinement specimens are comprehensively examined using various microscopy and analytical techniques, including polarization microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
