Background/aims: During continuous renal replacement therapy, relevant losses of nutritional substrates, vitamins, and trace elements via the filter may occur. We investigated filter lifetime efficiency during a 72-h treatment period.
Methods: This prospective study included 40 patients undergoing citrate continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD). The elimination rates were measured at 24, 48, and 72 h. To assess the influence of filter lifetime, we determined substrate loss every 24 h over a 72-h interval.
Results: Filter lifetime did not affect the loss of ionized calcium, inorganic phosphate, magnesium, zinc, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Nevertheless, we did observe clinically significant loss of ionized calcium and inorganic phosphate during CVVHD that required supplementation.
Conclusions: CVVHD leads to significant loss of ionized calcium and inorganic phosphate that is independent of the filter lifetime.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently attracted substantial interest because of its diverse applications. In the agriculture sector, automated methods for detecting plant diseases offer numerous advantages over traditional methods. In the current study, a new model is developed to categorize plant diseases within an IoT network.

Cooking fuels are sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are persistent in the environment and have detrimental effects on human health. Fifteen PCBs congeners from the smoke of eight (8) commonly used cooking fuels in Nigeria were investigated in this study. Glass fiber filters were used to collect air emissions during the combustion of cooking fuels in a controlled chamber.

Food freshness monitoring and volatile amine detection are key to food safety. In this study, we demonstrated the applicability of mixed-valence rhenium oxide quantum dots (MV-ReOQDs), synthesized via the hydrothermal reaction of α-cyclodextrin and rhenium ion precursors, in triethylamine (TEA) sensing. Spectroscopic correlation techniques showed that the developed MV-ReOQDs possessed mixed-valent rhenium, α-cyclodextrin as capped ligand, partially carbonized surface, and amorphous phase structure.

While H-H J-couplings are the cornerstone of all spectral assignment methods in solution-state NMR, they are yet to be observed in solids. Here we observe H-H J-couplings in plastic crystals of (1S)-(-)-camphor in solid-state NMR at magic angle spinning (MAS) rates of 100 kHz and above. This is enabled in this special case because the intrinsic coherence lifetimes at fast MAS rates become longer than the inverse of the H-H J couplings.

The direct epitaxial growth of high-quality III-V semiconductors on Si is a challenging materials science problem with a number of applications in optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells and on-chip lasers. We report the reduction of dislocation density in GaAs solar cells grown directly on nanopatterned V-groove Si substrates by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy. Starting from a template of GaP on V-groove Si, we achieved a low threading dislocation density (TDD) of 3 × 10 cm in the GaAs by performing thermal cycle annealing of the GaAs followed by growth of InGaAs dislocation filter layers.
