Functional polymorphisms in rhesus macaque FCGRT and β2-m.

Rhesus macaque is an important animal model for studies testing interventions like antibody therapeutics; as such knowledge of inter-individual variations in function of genes affecting antibody recycling is important for optimal experimental design. Neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), a heterodimer composed of FCGRT and β2-m chains, plays critical role in extending catabolic half-life of IgG. We studied genomic polymorphisms in rhesus macaque FcRn and asked if they are functional by assessing correlations with serum IgG or β2-m levels. We tested 75 animals and report the presence of a VNTR polymorphism in promoter of FcRn as well as a single nucleotide polymorphism in the signal peptide of β2-m. A VNTR minor allele was associated with lower levels of serum IgG. This polymorphism may account for inter-animal variation in antibody levels and has relevance for effective design of rhesus macaque studies investigating vaccine-induced antibody responses and passive immunizations.

Lesions of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord in adult macaque monkeys lead to the loss of hand inputs and large-scale expansion of the face inputs in the hand region of the somatosensory cortex. Inputs from alternate spinal pathways do not reactivate the deafferented regions of area 3b. Here, we determined how transections of the dorsal columns done within a few days after birth affect the developing somatosensory cortex.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is a human gammaherpesvirus associated with Kaposi's sarcoma and B cell malignancies. Like all herpesviruses, KSHV contains conserved envelope glycoproteins (gps) involved in virus binding, entry, assembly, and release from infected cells, which are also targets of the immune response. Due to the lack of a reproducible animal model of KSHV infection, the precise functions of the KSHV gps during infection are not completely known.

The unique environment of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau provides a great opportunity to study how primate intestinal microorganisms adapt to ecosystems. The 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenome analysis were conducted to investigate the correlation between gut microbiota in primates and other sympatric animal species living between 3600 and 4500 m asl. Results showed that within the same geographical environment, Macaca mulatta and Rhinopithecus bieti exhibited a gut microbiome composition similar to that of Tibetan people, influenced by genetic evolution of host, while significantly differing from other distantly related animals.

Objectives: Tooth dimensions typically scale with mandibular and postcranial size in primates, although the exact pattern of scaling varies. This study assesses whether correlations by tissue type, anatomical region, or function (mastication or intrasexual competition) are present and could therefore act as evolutionary constraints on tooth-jaw-body size relationships by estimating genetic and phenotypic correlations between dental, mandibular, and postcranial dimensions in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Materials And Methods: The teeth, mandibles, and postcrania of 362 adults from the Cayo Santiago skeletal collection were measured.
