Mouse inbred strains remain essential in science. We have analyzed the publicly available genome sequences of 36 popular inbred strains and provide lists for each strain of protein-coding genes that acquired sequence variations that cause premature STOP codons, loss of STOP codons and single nucleotide polymorphisms, and short in-frame insertions and deletions. Our data give an overview of predicted defective proteins, including predicted impact scores, of all these strains compared with the reference mouse genome of C57BL/6J. These data can also be retrieved via a searchable website (mousepost.be) and allow a global, better interpretation of genetic background effects and a source of naturally defective alleles in these 36 sequenced classical and high-priority mouse inbred strains.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is an important zoonotic pathogenic virus, which poses serious threats to public health. MPXV infection can be prevented by immunization against the variola virus. Because of the safety risks and side effects of vaccination with live vaccinia virus (VACV) strain Tian Tan (VTT), we constructed two gene-deleted VTT recombinants (TTVAC7 and TTVC5).

How macrophages in the tissue environment integrate multiple stimuli depends on the genetic background of the host, but this is still poorly understood. We investigate IL-4 activation of male C57BL/6 and BALB/c strain specific in vivo tissue-resident macrophages (TRMs) from the peritoneal cavity. C57BL/6 TRMs are more transcriptionally responsive to IL-4 stimulation, with induced genes associated with more super enhancers, induced enhancers, and topologically associating domains (TAD) boundaries.

Studies in humans indicate that certain serovars are more pathogenic than others. Specifically, several studies concluded that serovars from the C-complex are more pathogenic than those from the B-complex, although there are reports that do not support this finding. To investigate these results in an animal model, the eight genitourinary serovars were tested in two strains of mice: C3H/HeN and BALB/c.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the primary causes of mortality and disability, with arterial blood pressure being an important factor in the clinical management of TBI. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), widely used as a model of essential hypertension and vascular dementia, demonstrate dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which may contribute to glucocorticoid-mediated hippocampal damage. The aim of this study was to assess acute post-TBI seizures, delayed mortality, and hippocampal pathology in SHRs and normotensive Sprague Dawley rats (SDRs).

The prognosis of spinal cord injury (SCI) is closely linked to secondary injury processes, predominantly driven by neuroinflammation. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) plays a pivotal role in this inflammatory response. In previous work, we developed an anti-IL-18 antibody capable of neutralizing the active form of IL-18.
