The rat pancreatic β-cell expresses 6 splice variants of the Plasma Membrane Ca-ATPase (PMCA) and two splice variants of the Na/Ca exchanger 1 (NCX1). In the β-cell Na/Ca exchange displays a high capacity, contributes to both Ca outflow and influx and participates to the control of insulin release. Gain of function studies show that overexpression of PMCA2 or NCX1 leads to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca depletion with subsequent ER stress, decrease in β-cell proliferation and β-cell death by apoptosis. Loss of function studies show, on the contrary, that heterozygous inactivation of NCX1 (Ncx1) leads to an increase in β-cell function and a 5 fold increase in both β-cell mass and proliferation. The mutation also increases β-cell resistance to hypoxia, and Ncx1 islets show a 2-4 times higher rate of diabetes cure than Ncx1 islets when transplanted in diabetic animals. Thus, down-regulation of the Na/Ca exchanger leads to various changes in β-cell function that are opposite to the major abnormalities seen in diabetes. In addition, the β-cell includes the mutually exclusive exon B in the alternative splicing region of NCX1, which confers a high sensitivity of its NCX splice variants (NCX1.3 & 1.7) to the inhibitory action of compounds like KBR-7943. Heterozygous inactivation of PMCA2 leads to apparented, though not completely similar results. These provide 2 unique models for the prevention and treatment of β-cell dysfunction in diabetes and following islet transplantation.

Despite extensive research on the use of salts to enhance micellar growth, numerous questions remain regarding the impact of ionic exchange and molecular structure on charge neutralization. This study looks into how certain cations (Na, Ca, and Mg) affect the structure of a cocamidopropyl betaine CAPB and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate SDBS surfactant mixture, aiming toward applications in targeted delivery systems. The mixture consists of a zwitterionic surfactant, cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), combined in varying molar ratios at a total concentration of 200 mM.

Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is an electrochemical ion separation process that combines ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) with porous carbon electrodes to enhance desalination efficiency and address the limitations of conventional capacitive deionization (CDI). In this study, a cation-exchange membrane (CEM) embedded with a metal-organic framework (MOF) was developed to effectively separate monovalent and multivalent cations in influent solutions via MCDI. To fabricate CEMs with high monovalent ion selectivity, ZIF-8 was incorporated into sulfonated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (SPPO) at various weight ratios.

Potassium is a harmful impurity in the rhenium sinter, which adversely affects its mechanical properties by significantly reducing the density of sintered rhenium. Cationic resin is a promising material for potassium removal. In this study, the strong acid cationic exchange resin C160H was pretreated with an HNO solution to enhance its performance in potassium removal.

Intracellular Ca homeostasis dysregulation, through the modulation of calcium permeable ion channels and transporters, is gaining attention in cancer research as an apoptosis evasion mechanism. Recently, we highlighted a prognostic role for several calcium permeable channels. Among them, here, we focused on the plasma membrane bidirectional Na/Ca exchanger SLC8A1.

To explore the changes in groundwater hydrochemistry and its source influence in the low water level period of the southern oasis area of Gaochang District, Turpan City before and after the management of groundwater overexploitation, based on 12 groups of water samples in 2016 (three groups of unconfined water, nine groups of confined water) and 18 groups of water samples in 2023 (five groups of unconfined water, thirteen groups of confined water), mathematical statistics, hydrochemical diagraph, hydrogen and oxygen isotope means, and an absolute principle component-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model were used to analyze the changes and sources of groundwater hydrochemistry. The results showed that due to the dynamic conditions of groundwater, the dominant cation changed from Na to Ca, and the anion changed from HCO to SO. The dominant cation of confined water changed from Ca to Na, and the dominant anion remained unchanged as SO.
