In experimental contexts, affect-related word lists have been widely applied when examining how cognitive processes interact with emotional processes. These lists, however, present limitations when studying the relation between emotion and cognitive processes such as time and number processing because affective words do not inherently contain time or quantity information. Live events, in contrast, are experienced by an observer and therefore inherently carry affect information. Unfortunately, existing life-event lists and inventories have been largely applied within clinical contexts as diagnostic tools, and therefore are not suitable for many experimental contexts because they do not contain a balanced number of reliably positive, negative, and neutral life events. In Experiment 1, we create a standardized affect-related life-events list with 171 positive, negative, and neutral affect-related life events. In Experiment 2, we show that strength of affect and significance of the event are integral dimensions, suggesting that these two features are difficult to separate perceptually. The implications of these findings and some potential future applications of the created life-events list are discussed.

The adult mammalian heart is unable to undergo cardiac repair, limiting potential treatment options after cardiac damage. However, the fetal heart is capable of cardiac repair. In preparation for birth, cardiomyocytes (CMs) undergo major maturational changes that include exit from the cell cycle, hypertrophic growth, and mitochondrial maturation.

Using HBmito Crimson to Observe Mitochondrial Cristae Through STED Microscopy.

Mitochondrial cristae, formed by folding the mitochondrial inner membrane (IM), are essential for cellular energy supply. However, the observation of the IM is challenging due to the limitations in spatiotemporal resolution offered by conventional microscopy and the absence of suitable in vitro probes specifically targeting the IM. Here, we describe a detailed imaging protocol for the mitochondrial inner membrane using the Si-rhodamine dye HBmito Crimson, which has excellent photophysical properties, to label live cells for imaging via stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy.

Neurons are highly polarized cells, with axons that may innervate distant target regions. In the brain, basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCNs) possess extensive axons that project to several target regions such as the cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala, and may be exposed to a specific microenvironment in their axon targets that may have retrograde effects on neuronal health. Interestingly, BFCNs express the pan-neurotrophin receptor p75NTR throughout life while also concomitantly co-expressing all Trk receptors, making them capable of responding to both mature and precursor neurotrophins to promote survival or apoptosis, respectively.

Purpose Of Program: Canada's growing prevalence of people with kidney failure receiving kidney replacement therapy has necessitated the expansion of dialysis programs. Although facility-based hemodialysis is the predominant dialysis modality in Canada, it is substantially costlier than home dialysis (peritoneal or home hemodialysis). Initiatives to increase the uptake of home dialysis typically consist of didactic and experiential education.

Introduction: Aneurysmatic subarachnoid hemorrhages (aSAH) are life-threatening events with high mortality and morbidity. Hydrocephalus is a common complication, initially managed with an external ventricular drain (EVD). Persistent hydrocephalus often requires ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement to relieve intracranial pressure and prevent further neurological damage.
